EU looks into Pfizer, Moderna vaccine side effects

Shares in Moderna and Pfizer sank on Wednesday after the European Union drug regulator said it was looking into possible new side effects of the companies' COVID-19 vaccines.

That includes kidney inflammation, an allergic skin reaction, and a renal disorder with heavy protein loss in urine.

Pfizer is by far the biggest supplier of COVID-19 vaccines to the European Union, issuing just over 330 million doses in the region compared to some 43 million from Moderna. Both companies did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has not recommended any changes to the vaccine labels. It says the latest assessment is part of routine updates to the safety section of the authorized vaccines database.

It's also looking into menstrual disorders as a possible side effect of vaccines, including those from AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson.

Last month, the EMA found a possible link between very rare heart inflammation and Pfizer and Moderna's vaccines, which use mRNA technology. However, the European regulator and the World Health Organization have stressed that benefits from these vaccines outweigh any risks.

The watchdog did not give details on Wednesday on how many cases of the new side effects were recorded, but said it's requested more data from both companies.

My daughter is experiencing a lot of skin reactions. I told her I think it is the vaccine because she never had reactions like she is having now. Even broke out when the dermatologist gave her a prescription creme for her rosacea. (she got the Pfizer vaccine)

Dr. Fauci warns Americans may face having booster shots INDEFINITELY and says fully-vaccinated 'breakthrough' infections could still cause long COVID

Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Thursday that he can't rule out people having to have COVID-19 booster shots indefinitely as the virus continues to surge. Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the president, made his comments in an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN in which he also warned that fully vaccinated people with so-called breakthrough infections can still get long-term COVID.

'We know a lot more than we did to start, but there's obviously, you know, we need to be humble in the face of this virus,' Fauci said.

Fauci said 'there are a lot of factors' that go into making decisions such as whether people will routinely have to get vaccinated against COVID-19 like an annual flu shot. He said researchers have already started conducting studies giving boosters to people who have already been full vaccinated, which have shown hopeful promise that future booster shots beyond a third jab may not be needed.

'The good news about that is that the acceleration of the response goes way up. I mean even better than what you get with the two doses together. In other words, it goes up and up and then if you give a boost, it goes way up,' he said.

'I don't know for certain, but that could mean that you induce a response that's high enough - and durable enough - that you may not have to worry about what people are concerned about, needing a so-called boost every year or so.'

He continued: 'I would hope that the degree of elevation of response that we will see with the boost might actually give us a lot of wiggle room of not necessarily needing a boost often. But I have to be, as you say, we are humble and we are modest about it. We don't know the answer to that.'

A majority of Americans in highly vaccinated counties now live in covid hot spots, according to Post analysis

Two-thirds of Americans in highly vaccinated counties now live in coronavirus hot spots, according to an analysis by The Washington Post, as outbreaks of the highly transmissible delta variant - once concentrated in poorly vaccinated pockets - ignite in more populated and immunized areas. The Post analysis illustrates how rapidly the state of the pandemic changed in July from a problem for the unvaccinated to a nationwide concern.

The Post classified the highest top quarter of counties as high vaccination, with at least 54% of the population fully vaccinated. The lowest quarter of counties were classified as low vaccination, with fewer than 40% of the population fully vaccinated. The CDC identifies hot spots as areas with high and rising caseloads, as compared with areas with moderate or low covid-19 outbreaks.

On the Fourth of July, just four percent of residents of highly vaccinated communities lived in hot spots, compared with 13% of people in low-vaccination areas. The outbreaks initially grew in the poorly vaccinated areas, where 28% of residents lived in hot spots as of July 14, compared with 13% of residents in highly vaccinated communities.

The gap narrowed in recent weeks as cases surged in major West Coast cities, South Florida urban centers and the New York-to-Boston corridor. By August, it closed. About two-thirds of residents living in both highly and poorly vaccinated counties are now in hot spots with high and rising caseloads.

Their experiences are not the same. It's like the difference between being in a trailer and a house in a hurricane: Both might get hit, but one harder than the other. Living in a hot spot while vaccinated today is much safer than living in a hot spot while unvaccinated last summer. High-vaccination states have one-third the number of new cases per capita as low-vaccination states.

Hospitalization rates in states with less than 40% of their population fully vaccinated are four times higher than states that are at least 54% vaccinated, The Post found.

At least 74 people on Martha's Vineyard have tested positive for COVID since Barack Obama's maskless 60th birthday bash - the most cases on the island since April

A total of 74 people on Martha's Vineyard have tested positive for Covid-19 since former President Barack Obama's 60th birthday on Saturday. The spike in cases is more than any week since April in Martha's Vineyard. Health officials note it's still too early to know whether the hundreds of guests and workers at the maskless parties have contributed to the surge in cases. 'At this time we're not aware of any cases connected to the Obama party,' a Tisbury health agent and boards of health spokesperson told DailyMail.com. 'It's a little too early and the only way we're going to know is through comprehensive contact tracing,' they added. Hundreds of people attended the party, flying in from around the country and congregating under tents where partiers danced, ate and drank the night away.

Guests, workers, and let's not forget the media circus that would have surrounded the event as well.

Guests, workers, and let's not forget the media circus that would have surrounded the event as well.

They obviously think they're privileged without care about the fallout of spreading Covid to those guests, workers, and media personnel, the party must go on!...They should be setting the example instead of the total disregard and hypocrisy shown, but that seems to be the norm these days...

Time for the Great Covid Reset: Britain is unlocking at last. But it's not just the rules that must change for good... it's our whole national mindset, writes Professor BRENDAN WREN

PROF BRENDAN WREN: There I was savouring the buzzing atmosphere as I enjoyed a pint in the pub with friends, when it became clear that I needed to correct a misapprehension. All my drinking companions were double vaccinated and seemed to think this made them more or less bulletproof when it came to Covid. I explained to them this is not the case. While the vaccine is 90 per cent effective, that still means that if 50 million people receive it, five million of them could still fall victim to the virus - although they are certainly far less likely to suffer its most serious effects. It wasn't my intention to dent my friends' confidence in the vaccine. Indeed, quite the opposite. I believe we need a dramatic change of stance when it comes to Britain's approach to the pandemic - one that could best be summarised thus: stop fighting Covid, start living with it.

New Zealand's borders will remain closed until 2022: Jacinda Ardern vows to stick with Zero Covid strategy and will not ease restrictions until the entire population is double jabbed - despite chaos unfolding in Australia

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern (left) said the borders would not reopen until after the country's vaccine rollout was completed at the end of the year. The rollout has been much slower than in most developed nations (top right), with under 20 per cent of the population fully inoculated. Ardern said she hoped to cautiously reopen to the rest of the world next year while maintaining the country's virus-free status.

She said the changes would be 'careful and deliberate' to avoid allowing variants such as the highly contagious Delta strain into New Zealand, where there is no local transmission and domestic life is close to normal. 'Rushing could see us in the situation many other countries are finding themselves in,' Ardern said, citing an outbreak of the Delta variant in neighbouring Australia that has forced its two largest cities into renewed lockdown. The government is also warning its citizens to be prepared for a strict lockdown at the first sign of an outbreak of the Delta variant.

Last year, Fauci said 'you cannot force someone'

White House medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci predicted last year he could not foresee a situation in which the government would mandate a coronavirus vaccine. “I don't think you'll ever see a mandating of vaccine, particularly for the general public,” Fauci said during a town hall with Healthline.com in August 2020.

The idea, according to Fauci, was impossible. “If someone refuses the vaccine in the general public, then there's nothing you can do about that. You cannot force someone to take a vaccine," he said at the time.

Blood test can determine whether a patient will suffer from 'long Covid' by detecting long-lasting molecule in blood that may cause condition

A new simple blood test may be able to determine whether or not COVID-19 survivors will experience long-term symptoms. Researchers from the University of Cambridge, England, looked at so-called 'long Covid' patients. Up to two-thirds of people infected with coronavirus will develop the condition in some form, with the most severe cases potentially leaving people bed-ridden for months on end.

The team found that small protein molecules called cytokines that could have a link to the condition and that performing a cheap, fast and inexpensive blood test may the best way to diagnose the condition.

'Long Covid' appears in patients that have recovered from the virus and continue exhibiting symptoms for weeks, or potentially months or years, after clearing the infection. There are a wide-array of symptoms that can appear, including continued loss of taste and smell, long-term fatigue and long-term sensory issues. The causes of the condition remain unknown and several studies are being conducted to examine long-term effects.

The new research builds on an Australian study where researchers used blood tests to detect COVID-19 infection. Participants in the Australian study were repeatedly blood tested following infections to find any potential biomarkers indicating they had previously had the virus. Cytokines, which are produced by the body in response to infections, are often found to be lingering in a persons body for months after infection. A second type of cytokines were found by the Cambridge researchers that they believe is tied to the development of long Covid.

'Because we currently have no reliable way of diagnosing long COVID, the uncertainty can cause added stress to people who are experiencing potential symptoms,' Dr Nyarie Sithole, author of the study and member of the Department of Medicine at Cambridge, told SWNS.

'If we can say to them: "Yes, you have a biomarker and so you have long COVID," we believe this will help allay some of their fears and anxieties.' This would give medical professionals the first concrete way to detect long Covid. It would also be the first demonstrable indicator of the condition.

Knowing this now, the Cambridge team plans to launch further investigation into the link between the biomarker and long Covid, and potential treatments for the condition. One issue many medical professionals have had with long Covid, and why many patients suffering from the condition have been cast aside, is that many people with long Covid will appear totally fine on many diagnostic tests.

It also opens the door to figuring out how it works, and how to treat it.

Biden administration will recommend COVID booster shots for ALL Americans eight months after second dose

US experts are expected to recommend COVID-19 vaccine boosters for all Americans, regardless of age, eight months after they received their second dose of the shot, to ensure lasting protection against the coronavirus as the delta variant spreads across the country.

Federal health officials have been actively looking at whether extra shots for the vaccinated would be needed as early as this fall, reviewing case numbers in the US as well as the situation in other countries such as Israel, where preliminary studies suggest the vaccine's protection against serious illness dropped among those vaccinated in January.

An announcement on the US booster recommendation was expected as soon as this week, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Doses would only begin to be administered widely once the Food and Drug Administration formally approves the vaccines. That action is expected for the Pfizer shot in the coming weeks.

So what is the likely fallout from this huge gathering in Central Park on Saturday ?

Of course, they will all have been double-jabbed, have proof of negative tests and will wear masks and keep two Metre from anyone else; won't they ?

New York will find out two week later.

Local news states that only those who've had the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines are going to need the booster shot, they said they are awaiting a report from Johnson & Johnson before recommending a booster of that vaccine...

From everything I've read it seems the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is holding up better than the Pfizer or Moderna...

White House dismisses WHO objection to U.S. COVID booster program

Top U.S. health officials are dismissing criticism from the World Health Organization over the plan to offer COVID booster shots to vaccinated Americans while some parts of the world are still struggling to get access to coronavirus vaccines.

The Biden administration on Wednesday formally introduced recommendations that Americans over the age of 18 who received the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines should get a third booster shot eight months after receiving their second dose. Booster shots will be available on Sept. 20, pending approval from the Food and Drug Administration.

At a virtual press conference announcing the booster program, members of the White House COVID-19 response team were asked to respond to comments from Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, who had objected to the move. “We’re planning to hand out extra life jackets to people who already have life jackets, while we’re leaving other people to drown without a single life,” Ryan said.

White House COVID response coordinator Jeff Zients said that the United States can do both. “To end this pandemic, we have to protect the American people, and we have to continue to do more and more to vaccinate the world,” Zients said. “Both are critical.”

That would not make sense. Ivermectin is used to kill parasites. How would that help someone suffering from a respiratory virus? From what I understand it was used prophylactically, not after one had the virus. And there is a news story that a health scientist is being tried for dissuading people from using Ivermectin because so many died.

I found an FDA article against Ivermectin use for Covid. There is a lot of different stuff out there.
