On a side note, hermit kingdom of North Korea appears to be safe from this infection, although bordering China.

At least one policy, isolation, is paying of for N. Korea. They might even be the last one to survive on Earth in cast this epidemics kills everybody else?

I wonder if Chinese travel that border frequently, maybe military personnel, maybe supply transports and tourists or would that border be mostly restricted?...How do you think the average Chinese citizen views North Korea?...I wonder if many Chinese nationals live in North Korea...

Two cases of coronavirus reported in France
First cases of their kind seen in Europe

The first two confirmed cases of the deadly coronavirus have been detected in France, Health Minister Agnès Buzyn said Friday. One has been confirmed in Paris and one in Bordeaux. Both patients are currently in the hospital.

The patients had recently traveled from China, the site of what the World Health Organization (WHO) has deemed an epidemic that has gripped that country with 26 deaths and more than 900 falling sick.

New cases have been reported in South Korea, Japan, and Singapore.

As reported by Le Monde, the announcement included particulars on the patient in Bordeaux, a 48-year-old man of Chinese origin who is in isolation at Bordeaux University Hospital. He initially saw doctors Thursday for a cough and fever, routine symptoms resembling the flu, and was immediately put in isolation after he admitted he just traveled from Wuhan, where the outbreak has been the worst.

Details are not yet available on the patient in Paris.

The WHO said it is actively monitoring the event and are in close communication with counterparts in China. Thirteen cities have stopped travel by train, bus, plane, and other means of transport until the situation is under control. The WHO held a meeting on the virus in Geneva on Thursday but did not declare the outbreak an international emergency.

Wuhan hospital doctor, 62, dies after contracting coronavirus while battling to save patients as medics collapse on wards after death toll jumps to 41 with 1,281 cases and 56m people on lockdown in China

Liang Wudong, 62, (top) who had been treating patients in Wuhan, died from the virus this morning, state-run China Global Television Network reported in a tweet. It was not immediately clear if his death was already counted in the official toll of 41, of which 39 were in the central province of Hubei, where Wuhan is located.

The death toll from China's coronavirus outbreak jumped on Saturday to 41 from 26 a day earlier as the Lunar New Year got off to a gloomy start, with authorities curbing travel and cancelling public gatherings (right, doctors treating patients). Wuhan, a city of 11 million, has been in virtual lockdown since Thursday, with nearly all flights at the airport cancelled and checkpoints blocking the main roads leading out of town. Authorities have since imposed transport restrictions on nearly all of Hubei province, which has a population of 59 million.

I am not trying to start WWIII :), but maybe virus is secret Chinese biological attack on US in revenge for Trump's taxes on import of Chinese goods?

That would be ultimate fake news, but is there a possibility?

Does anyone view Britain as a nation who would play down the severity of such an outbreak ? I think America would be straight and many European nations but China, no I don't believe it and personally believe this to be far more serious than reported.

Typically their culture is one of privacy and control.

Proud and ancient people.

I am with you on this one, I think this coronavirus epidemic is far worse than being reported, the woman who said there were really closer to 90,000 in China infected is probably closer to reality I think...I also think there are more deaths than being reported, there were many videos from people in China revealing a more serious problem than being reported in the media and officials are deleting those videos quickly...

This virus is highly contagious and is likely mutating and adapting to the new human hosts, it could turn even worse very quickly but it seems to be downplayed, perhaps so not to cause panic but drastic measures may need to be implemented to stop the spread and it already might be too late...

Starbucks Closes More Than 2,000 Stores In China Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
Starbucks has temporarily closed more than half of its stores in mainland China as an outbreak of coronavirus has surged through the country, affecting thousands of people.

Starbucks executives on Tuesday called the viral outbreak a "very complex situation," adding that the company closed its locations in China at the direction of local government officials as well as "proactively," to limit the spread of the virus among workers and customers.

"Our immediate focus is on two key priorities in China," CEO Kevin Johnson told analysts on an earnings call. "First, caring for the health and well-being of our partners and customers in our stores. Second: playing a constructive role in supporting local health officials and government leaders as they work to contain the coronavirus."

China is a key, fast-growing market for Starbucks and many other companies that are starting to see an impact from the outbreak and the measures that Chinese authorities have imposed in response, including a lockdown of multiple cities with tens of millions of residents.

Other chains such as McDonald's and KFC have also been closing stores. McDonald's is expected to share an update on Wednesday when it reports its quarterly earnings. Apple CEO Tim Cook said on Tuesday that his company has closed one of its retail stores.

"Many of the stores that remain open have also reduced operating hours," Cook said. "We're taking additional precautions and frequently deep-cleaning our stores as well as conducting temperature checks for employees."

Starbucks CEO Johnson said he had anticipated raising the company's financial forecast for the year on Tuesday, but would not do so now "due to the dynamic situation unfolding with the coronavirus." China is the second-largest market for Starbucks, which had almost 4,300 stores there at the end of 2019.

In a company earnings release on Tuesday, Starbucks said "Currently, we have closed more than half of our stores in China and continue to monitor and modify the operating hours of all of our stores in the market in response to the outbreak of the coronavirus."

Chinese authorities say that a surge in cases of the rapidly spreading coronavirus in recent weeks has sickened nearly 6,000 people as of Wednesday, with more than 130 deaths. Additional cases have been reported outside of China, including in Australia, France and Canada and the U.S.

In the United States, five confirmed cases involve people who recently traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak. At a news conference Tuesday, top U.S. health officials reiterated that the disease — while serious — is not currently a threat to ordinary Americans.

I concur with ninety to a hundred thousand as being more like it. It harks back to me of the Mongolian empire and how they down played any losses or casualties to save face and the differences where huge.

I have seen these vids of nurses and medical staff freaking out and when in private with their identity concealed are talking big numbers and I do believe them.

If I get it, I'm Suing Sum Wun.

Mongolians gave us the black death bc.

The fact that it can be carried for two weeks with the carrier showing no symptoms is a real concern for all when tackling containment.

As for the actual potency and effect on the healthy individual, it may be less of a worry but yes I have a very uneasy feeling about the incubation period which may give way to a pandemic infection.

I read its also contagious during that two week period showing no signs the carrier has it, very disturbing...

Does anyone have this queasy feeling that this virus could get out of hand pretty easily and I am not talking about China alone?

Its possible we are beyond that and just don't know it yet, I'm starting to consider it may be already out of hand in the US and spreading everywhere too fast now...
