I think it is simply overpopulation. A perfect breeding ground for a z virus.

More opportunity for a germ to evolve into something new.
I think this germ took them by surprise, and they were so busy trying to keep up, it did blindside them in a way.

I think they just were not prepared for this thing to sneak up on them the way it did because by the time any symptoms became present, hundreds or thousands contracted it via condensed populous of their food markets.

It was a sleeping virus bomb, and a mushroom cloud of "Oh... shit!"

I can't help but wonder if this is Nature's way of issuing a correction. It does that from time to time with any population and we're no exception. War, Famine, Pestilence, Death.

Watched a little of Dr.Fauci's interview on CNN's town hall last night. He's good. I'm paraphrasing, but let's let the actual medical and scientific people speak for themselves. Politicians are there to make the right noises to reassure us.

One thing he did seem to downplay was how hardy this thing is on various surfaces. Don't know why, but this popped into my head and we could all use a little levity.

A correction of what though, I get the self governing of numbers by nature throughout our world. Has to be numbers surely but the world is vast and space with opportunity abundant, no threat for nature to aid or numbers to sacrifice for the sake of another.

Game permits are issued based on some calculation that takes all sorts of factors into account. Avoids famine, disease, keeps the breeding population strong.

Maybe AI could sniff out 'big data' and tell us what the hell made Wuhan the source and the surrounding area such a fertile breeding ground. Hopefully it won't decide it's time for Judgement Day, Carousel, or start issuing permits.

When a species is eating too much of one specific species would nature balance the scale by reducing the consumer if it was topping the food chain ?

Yes that is terrible news and a dark glimpse of what is to come for some. I did think I heard better news of the infection ratio dropping like China and a few others have but that doesn't match those numbers well. Hoping that was a one off worst case scenario.
