Do you Like Modern Westerns?

What do you think of Westerns set in the present, or close to it? Are they really Westerns?

I'm interested in your thoughts about the sub-genre as a whole, but in particular am wondering if anyone has watched Justified (2010-2015)? I'm already paying for it via Hulu, so I've decided to take a peek at it.

I'm trying out Justified as a replacement for Magnum P.I. which I've just decided to ditch.

I just looked it up, Justified is based on a short story called 'Fire in the Hole' by Elmore Leonard and most of the reviews I saw were good reviews...I like westerns, modern or old timey, any are fine with me if they have a good story...

Don't know if it qualifies but I liked the remake of True Grit. Both it and the old version are surprisingly true to the Charles Portis book.

Yeah I liked the remake, possibly more so than the older John Wayne version...

When I was a kid I used to think Westerns were the most boring things on earth, Between Westerns and News were the worst parts of television, Later in life, nothing beats a good western.

I find myself really liking Gunsmoke. I'm sorry but it's simply underrated. When people say westerns they are always talking about The good the bad and the ugly. and it was a masterpiece, But There is so much out there. Like Bonanza and The Big Valley. The last one mentioned it's only if you are die-hard western and hard up for something new.

Btw, I wasn't a fan of true Grit. The whole Here is a helpless little girl who becomes a gun-wielding badass was just too over the top for me. Provided, maybe there were little girls in those days who did such things, But, Still. It's not my thing. If true grit is the one I'm thinking of, It's the one where the orphaned little girl is taught to defend herself.. I may be getting it mixed up with another western.

Does anyone Remember F- Troop? From the golden age of westerns? Yes, it was a comedy. But, it was still good, Many could say Gunsmoke, was a comedy at times...

In my humble opinion... The modern remake of True Grit with Jeff Bridges is just about as good as it gets as regards to a remake , and as we are discussing 'Western Movies' [we used to call them all cowboy films when I was young lol] it shines like a beacon to showcase the talent of the Cohen brothers. .. But it is not the only 'modern western movie' that I have enjoyed immensely over the past few years. Off the top of my head I can name three more that I believe to be it's equal... Hostiles (2017) with Christian Bale , Wes Studi and a great supporting cast , The Sisters Brothers (2018) with John C Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix ... again with a terrific supporting cast, and The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs (2018) which starred just about everyone in Hollywood. ... and that's not to mention the two Tarantino westerns [Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight]... plus many more that will no doubt be popping into my head for the rest of the day lol... btw... are films like The Revenant and Hell Or High Water classed as 'Modern Westerns' on this thread? ... what are the parameters of 'modern western? ... anyway, i'll put this trailer for what I truly believe was ground breaking T.V from 18 years ago that hasn't in my opinion been close to being matched yet....

Cheers.

Loved it. No way that would fly in today's PC climate. I remember it was a big treat to get cleaned up and sit in my jammies with Gramp watching Bonanza on the old Zenith black & white.

Peter Graves was Sheriff Dillon's brother. James Arness was the original Thing in The Thing

Deadwood sort of lost its way as it progressed - I didn't think too much of the movie they made.

My wife and I still chuckle about Wu's pigs - Swinjin Hamdai ! with the fingers crossed :) Somehow that made me think of Christopher's saying it'll be a while before he can eat at Satriale's Pork Store again ......

Loved it... Hoss Cartwright was always my favourite  ... but to be honest, the comedic situations that Buck and Manolito used to get themselves into made High Chaparral my number one cowboy show in those days... ... and then later came this to quickly overtake the other two [as well as Gunsmoke] ... ... such is the fickleness of an adolescent western fan. :p

Here's a new sci-fi western being released on Amazon Prime April 15th...

Old Henry (2021) is a modern made movie which I think was brilliant...

The Revenant

The Relevant is a great movie, one that I had to warm up to at first...I think that was because of DiCaprio, I don't see him as the type to star in a western, especially after seeing his underperformance in The Quick and The Dead...He was young in that movie though and still green back then lol, so after a second viewing of The Relevant I've come to like it...

I've not watched any of the western TV series as you and @pigfarmer mentioned...I've heard they're all good series but the only westerns I've seen are movie types...However, now that I think about it, I did watch a short lived sci-fi western series called Firefly and the follow-up movie Serenity...Would Firefly be considered a modern western or a western at all?...

On your recommendation I watched this film last night Nivek, ... And i'm pleased to say that I thought it was brilliant! ... I can't praise the film high enough, it was thoroughly absorbing from start to finish. Tim Blake Nelson [old Buster Scruggs himself] gave a particularly smooth and understated performance, and the slight twist in the story [i'll not spoil it for anyone that's going to watch. lol] was perhaps not really necessary .. but nice anyway. ... Excellent film , thanks for the tip,... got any more of that class Nivek? :)

Cheers Buddy.

This is another one that I saw and enjoyed a couple of years ago, and thought it might be a good one that had slipped past your attention... It's unusual in that it is a western movie that has a supernatural angle with. ... without spoiling it! ... anyone who hasn't seen it, give it a go... it's good!

... and before I go... there's always Bone Tomahawk , which if you haven't already seen it, is in my view the best western-come-horror film that's been made.

Cheers.

Hey there 1963, yeah Bone Tomahawk is a good western horror film, I've only seen it once and recently too...

Thanks for the tip on The Wind, I have not heard of it before and will watch it later tonight or tomorrow night...It certainly does look entertaining...
