I suggest you read about the not so “kindly” Robert E. Lee and his treatment of slaves. Lee spoke differently when the Civil War had ended and many people wanted to see him hung for treason.

The Myth of the Kindly General Lee

Good advice...….especially since the confederate government was based on the superiorty of the white race over the African slave in defense of slavery.

I don't know what you're implying here, I am quite aware of Lee's treatment of slaves and actions during the war...

I wasn’t referring to any of your comments. Other members have made it sound as if Lee was this enlightened being concerning slavery. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Uggh, so tired of this never ending problem. How about we get rid of all the Civil War statues? Personally, I don't see the war as something to celebrate. It was a monstrous crime we committed against ourselves, North and South. Yes, it effectively ended slavery. That is good, and it is the only Civil War related thing worth celebrating. Otherwise, it was Americans slaughtering other Americans. Why should we celebrate that? The wounds that our nation inflicted upon itself from 1861-1865 never healed. At times (such as now) they start bleeding again and everyone feels the pain.
