Earth has a Quasi-Satellite

It's referred to as a quasi-satellite because it's too distant to be considered a natural satellite. The object is 40 meters across and is called 2016 HO3.

It turns out that our moon isn’t alone out there, orbiting our planet on its own. Earth has a companion in space which has been orbiting our world for over a century, and NASA has only recently spotted it...

They said it has been orbiting earth for 100 years and will continue to orbit for 100's more. The Wikipedia page said the sun has more influence on the object than the Earth. I presume it will eventually break its orbit. Because it is so far away they can only safely refer to it as a quasi-satellite.

The moon is also leaving earth, but that will take around 50 billion years or so before it drifts away....

Why is the Moon leaving us?

Today it’s drifting away at 1-2 cm/year. Such heartache! We just thought it seemed like the days were longer, but it’s not just an emotional effect of seeing our longtime friend leaving us, there’s a real physical change happening. Our days are getting 1/500th of a second longer every century.

Problem is what will happen to the tides when its gone ?? Sci Fi predicting again like when in Space 1999 the Moon is blown out of its orbit when a Nuclear dump explodes. No good sticking bases up there then.

Can't believe you're familiar with an obscure American TV show that was on the air years before you were born! :huh8:

I have a very large sci collection and delve into the mists of time quite a bit , even back to the silent movies days. I have over 2,000 movies and tv shows all sci fi. Apart from that I put 'moon leaving earth' into You Tube and it found that clip for me so I cheated. As far as being obscure they show a heap of old sci fi both movies and tv shows on the 7Two tv channel here free to air and are always showing old sci fi and old tv series. They are playing Charlies Angels as I type next is Columbo and Mannix. Star Trek is my favourite as is Stargate SG1 .
