    QUOTE:

Briefly, a single nuclear weapon exploded at high altitude above the United States
will interact with the Earth’s atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetic field to produce an
electromagnetic pulse (EMP) radiating down to the Earth and additionally create
electrical currents in the Earth. EMP effects are both direct and indirect. The former are
due to electromagnetic “shocking” of electronics
and stressing of electrical systems, and the latter The damage level could be sufficient to
be catastrophic to the Nation, and our arise from the damage that “shocked”—upset,
current vulnerability invites attack. damaged, and destroyed—electronics controls then
inflict on the systems in which they are embedded.
The indirect effects can be even more severe than the direct effects.

Yes they can be very disastrous......Problem is especially in the US we are not prepared for such an event.

I don't think any country in the world is prepared for such an event, of course the US government and other governments might have backups in place but they have little to no backup power plans for the general populations...

Your right..But the biggest thing is the price...Major power companies in the US do not have the cash it would take to protect our grids from this.

Funny thing is ; North Korea who would happily EMP USA, would probably survive a attack on its own ground due to its
    low tech infrastructure

Most likely...But it would degrade their promising nuclear program I am sure none of that would survive an EMP and they would be back at square one. But while we are discussing an EMP lets not forget that a CME could create the same situation such as the Carrington event.

They could fire it from a ship or submarine off the coast...I can't remember how far up the explosion needs to be in order to be most effective...

I think that the weapons held in secret would quickly vaporize any attempts at an EMP attack.
What looks like harmless communications satellites are locked and loaded weapon satellites ready when needed.
We probably have directed EMP weapons that can be shot out as a narrow beam.

    IMHO

Well while EMP's are a real threat a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) could cause the same amount of problems so it's a two edged sword.
