The social media giants are out of control and need to be heavily regulated and put back in their place...

They need to be forced into not doing censorship. Ramp up laws against this and make it so nasty no one will dare do censorship again.
Or just plain be shut down permanently. Let someone else with better morals, run a similar site.

I think things like this have an indirect benefit. In time there will have to be legal guardrails around certain things of necessity.

Salivation is the first step in digestion. Regulation is the first step in funsnatching.

I already announced to my friends on FB a few months ago that I am only using FB to keep in touch with friends and family through messenger. The newsfeed now is unbelievably toxic -- just a bunch of folks who want to constantly rant and post political commentary. I no longer look at the newsfeed and I don't miss it. Zuckerberg is an arrogant little shit who makes money by turning friends and relatives against each other. There is a special hell waiting for people like him.

I only use FB to stay in touch with relatives that I would never hear from otherwise. If FB collapsed tomorrow it really wouldnt hirt my feelings. One thing I have noticed, many people turn into bullies and arseholes when they are on that site, even though they might be fairly polite in real life.

Facebook is not designed to help anyone be happy. It is designed to create a feeling of emptiness in people to lure them with a false promise that the next click on something will help you will feel better, but it only continues the downward spiral.
I left FB years ago, because This became so obvious to me.

Australian news also tends to do more honest reporting about things here in the US versus our own corrupt media. That is probably a motivating factor as well.
Zuckerberg is a radical leftist. Even other leftist do not like him.

The social media that actually matters to me are chat forums like this one. I belong to several of them for my different interests. I am shy and introverted in person, and these forums are valuable to me for socialization. I suppose it is much like how, in centuries past, like minded people would frequently exchange letters.

Social media is like alcohol or gambling. There's nothing wrong with partaking in it. Unfortunately some people get carried away and let it control their lives.

I think I mostly agree with Kchoo's comments. Some people get hooked on the endorphin high they get from likes and shares on FB and Twitter. At first the high makes you happy but after a while it gets harder and harder to feel happy and you find yourself becoming even lonelier and angrier. Like drugs or alcohol, it can be perfectly healthy as long as you don't abuse it.

I guess I am an old fart. If I need to contact someone I have my smartphone in which I can call, text or email that person. Why do I need to depend on Zuckerberg and Facebook to reach others??

Right? Who says that excessive meaningless contact has value?

At one time when you actually wrote a letter and had to lick it & stick it, or crank out a # on a rotary phone you could reasonable argue that you had something to say. The current instant satisfaction method has rendered the meaning a bit thin. Believe me, I text because it's handy for small stuff but would never dream of using it for
relationships or anything with real depth to it. Generational divide I guess.

I have two old friends from high school in different parts of the country. Obviously my age. They have somehow confused texting long strings of emojis with real communication and annoyed me in the process. Somehow we communicated just fine and then this laziness appeared. @Jim_from_the_South is better qualified to read the friggin' hieroglyphics than I am. One has been trying to tell me about Texas and if it weren't for the news I'd have no clue what he was going on about. All I can conclude is that he had enough juice to power up the stupid phone.

I'm 42 and didn't really get into anything computer related until grad school in the mid 2000's. I am not good at having in person conversations or talking on the phone, never haver been. On the other hand, I am good at conversations through writing or text. If not for an internet dating site I never would have met my wife. Being able to communicate with each other without speaking at first really helped us to get comfortable with each other before we even talked on the phone. I text my friends several times a day, but don't really call them very much at all. It just works better for me to read what someone has to say, think about it for a few hours, then give them a well thought out reply a few hours later.
