You left something out - Gene's drool....

I like how he states 'in respect to Chris' - as if setting up the narrative that people should be attacking O'Brien over this, instead of himself.

He's probably enthused to have a statement to use as an out instead of drawing more attention to his scamming by losing another co-host, even though everyone knows the real reason Chris left.

Perhaps Chris O'Brien will eventually do an "off the record" interview as David Biedny did about his actual emotional experience being a Paracast host with Gene constantly begging for money from guests and everyone breathing oxygen within reach. Chris's message was very polite and should not cause any controversy among the "faithful" in the Paracast Cult.

I'm a lurker to this, and a person with a longtime interest in the legitimate aspects of the field, however minute it is these days. I just wanted to comment on a few things, as I listened to The Paracast off and on for a while, but won't any longer. From reading the back and forth through the various blogs, forums, and social media there's a few things that need to be said. I don't want to see anyone go homeless or broke, but you have to own up to your own actions and make amends to decide to go forward. I'm sure he's lurking, so here is something better than a solicitation of money - advice to get out of this mess:

1 - First should be apologizing to others, to his two former co-hosts who left the show, and those who he's solicited donation or borrowed money from. Not to mention the history of court judgements in the double digits that he's apparently been connected to. Denial and externalizing everything on a million different things does nothing. TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THE SITUATION. Everyone has a bad beat, but for this to go on 12+ years now, it's time to look in the mirror and get a grip for your own salvation.

2 - There are people willing to help, but it's completely unreasonable to be completely non-transparent about your finances and also ask for money. I will tell you, if I am ever in the situation where I have to rely on the support of strangers, I'm keeping every receipt, I'm counting every penny, and watching every single thing I do and living on a skeleton budget.

I don't mind someone who is LEGITIMATELY trying their hardest to avoid costs and work their butt off. If someone said 'hey I'm in a bad spot, this is my revenue, these are my expenses, what do I do?' But how forthcoming has he been? How often has his weekly expenses been shown? His former co-host said he eats out every week, and previously leased a vehicle. I mean, seriously? How much is spent on food, vehicle, rent, etc every month? I read from a court posting that his eviction costs were four digits. Four digits for rent? How can someone POSSIBLY justify donations for someone this isn't willing to cut his own costs. Lets start with this:

phoenix apts/housing for rent "mesa" - craigslist

Craigslist search, apartments in Arizona, with a max rent of $700. If you have to cram into a studio or small 1br, then so be it. If you have to take the dog to the kennel or give him away, so be it. If you have to drive a clunker 90s vehicle, so be it. I used to drive a 91 Oldsmobile with a blown head gasket that damn near killed me to get by at one point. I used to donate plasma for $60 bucks a week. If you have to live on ramen noodles and spaghetti for a year, so be it. THESE are the steps you take to turn things around. Relentlessness and grinding. Not going eviction to eviction refusing to lower your standard of living off of the backs of others.

3 - Finally, it's 2018. It's completely unreasonable to expect with thousands of podcasts out there, to make any sort of living off of a podcast to a niche group of people. Honestly, Gene has been extremely fortunate to be able to start one years earlier before this became a boom industry and get anything out of it. Most people do this as a HOBBY and do it just as well as you do, and get paid nothing. Uber and Lyft are not meaningful jobs, they're also hobby positions for people to earn a little extra income. I do not know how podcasting and ride sharing is supposed to be considered a meaningful source of income.

If I were in that position, I would swallow my pride and do anything to get out of it. Start with this:

Supercenter 03833 - Hourly Positions

Right there is a Wal-Mart position near the area, become a greeter. Their minimum wage is at least $11 an hour, and near the West Coast I'm guessing maybe more. I see people upwards of their age in the 80s working locally. Even on a conservative 30 hour workweek at $11 an hour, that's $1320 a month - and almost all of that money would be exempt from any garnishments or taxes, and would qualify for an Earned Income Tax Credit at the end of the year, as well as be proof of revenue for food stamps. That's not even counting keeping the podcast going and revenue from that, and doing what you can with ride sharing at other times.

Start with that, email and call ten places from Craigslist with $700 and under rent, show me your grocery cost for the week, and a couple of applications to Wal-Mart, Target, or wherever and I will throw in my own money to help you out. You can't expect to rely on the generosity of others while not being willing to help yourself and be transparent about your costs.

What I've just explained is a completely and totally reasonable solution to your problem. I didn't say easy, but it's a solution, and you would probably garner more sympathy showing a willingness to be transparent, cut expenses, and go to a place of employment on a payroll for people to help you in the future.

Because he posted this on the UFO Trail blog under a registered account:

"Whatever dude, I so tired of Gene, his pathetic begging and getting slimed while simply attempting to present quality guests and drill down to the essence of the subject matter covered on the show. I'm NOT shutting down conversations and can appreciate your POV concerning his panhandling. I'm absolutely feuds and through enabling his at best, questionable behavior. I'm as much a victim here as anyone. You can't put a price on 10 years of work the vast majority of it for free. I ain't the bad guy here and I resent your implication to the contrary. If you and others don't like what's been happening, get yourselves together and do a class action suit. If what you say is true, there should be no shortage of duped victims to gather together.

As to my own effort to place a triangulated monitoring system in the SLV and making a onetime request for help, there's a big difference to ask for help one-time for a legitimate scientific effort and a decade's-long program of panhandling and scamming. And he's not "running interference for me" as much as you'd like to think so. I AM speaking out against his scamming and I'm waiting for him to retire so that I can rebuild the show, if that's even possible. In the meantime, I will not appear on the Paracast as host. I'm done.."

Chris O'Brien also just quit as co-host of The Paracast, no mention of Gene's begging, but according to his blog posts it's obviously the reason, and he doesn't want to rock the boat:

"A month shy of the 10 year anniversary of my first appearance on the Paracast as a guest, I’m sad to announce that I will no longer be involved as the co-host of the Paracast radio program. It’s been a event-filled nine+ years that I will always look back at fondly. All the wonderful guests, passionate listeners and amazing, astute forum participants made this program and community one of the most up2speed, informed and respected in the paranormal field. I only hope that my involvement brought some of that respect to the show and that my personal brand of integrity and passion helped push the Paracast toward the top of the heap.

Because of new emerging broadcasting opportunities, a re-invigorated San Luis Valley Monitoring/Camera Project and a difficult follow up book to Stalking the Herd, I find my time cannot be stretched to encompass all of my pursuits. This show deserves 100% involvement and I refuse to be half-ass about anything I do. We make it sound easy, but the Paracast is not simply a two-hour conversation every week. It is hard work that involves research, reading books and show preparation. The past couple of years, I feel that I have not been able to put the time into the show that it deserves and I feel the show cannot be allowed to suffer.

I wish the Paracast and Gene luck and I will always appreciate and cherish the countless kind comments and unflagging support extended to me by this community over my years here.

Some parting words of advice: When they keep telling you to "keep your eyes to the sky," don't forget to sometimes keep your ear to the ground. And, when you dig, you'll find there is usually more dirt to uncover.

If you’d like to be kept up2speed on my projects, send me your contact info and I’ll smuggle you the details of what I am up to w/ all my various projects and pursuits: cob@tmv.us

I agree about extreme skeptics, I think there is good information there though where news can be posted a little quicker and get noticed if you follow the field. I know Jeremy Corbell and The Black Vault guy have posted there before. There's also a lot of random trash from Youtubers hoaxers like secureteam that get posted there, and get exposed, so I can't blame a ton of the skepticism - a lot is bad video.

A farewell to Chris:
I am saddened by the departure of Chris. His voice one of reason.
In a field rife with fraud and hoaxes Chris sought the signal from the noise. When Blake cousins was on he grilled him without mercy. Chris did the work.
He earned my respect. The man has done more to advance the field then linda Milton howe. His voice his insights will be greatly missed Chris has closed one book a new one opens.
I wish him well.
Farewell Chris..
You earned my respect.

Anybody else here remember Dr. Gene Scott, the radio preacher who spent hours admonishing, cajoling, and shaming his listeners into sending him money? His shtick worked wonderfully well, as he ended up living on a fifteen million dollar estate paid for by working stiffs who didn't have enough sense to know a con man when they heard one. On camera, he seemed to be laughing to himself at how well it all worked.

Seems like "our" Gene didn't get the whole recipe. Maybe it's the missing Dr. part, I dunno. He toils away at two podcast "jobs" that apparently pay about 20,000 dongs an hour, and humorlessly spams anyone he can with crap that doesn't even make sense. If he spent as much time working a normal job as he spends policing the Paracast forum and begging others to pay his rent, he could afford a modest place although I doubt such a place would come with a pool. People raise families on $11.oo an hour without begging anyone to send them money, or even whining. Go flip some burgers, Gene. It's never too late to build a little character.

I am actually embarrassed for Ryan Sprague, appearing on the latest Paracast. Gene is babbling away about old American TV shows, as if this is of interest to anyone. Ryan is doing his best to stay on the same level, the consummate professional. Now Gene is talking about gargling. Wow, this is really going downhill fast. Good Lord! THIS is the gold standard? Now Gene is talking about Supergirl on TV. Can you believe this? Evidently, Gene has plenty of time to watch TV. Ryan can respond to any comment, no matter how inane. Now Gene is talking about some old old musical. Now Gene is talking about old 1950's sci-fi movies. And people are paying to listen to this? Ah, time to bring up the X Files and Independence Day movie nostalgia. Goggs just said that a crazy idea just popped into his head. THAT I CAN BELIEVE!!! Everyone! This has nothing to do with Gene's personal life. If I came upon this show on YOUTUBE, I would be gone by now. Unbelievable. An old fart talking about times long long gone with Ryan trying to build off Gene's babbling with Goggs making a comment every 20 minutes. Time to drop this turkey.

Babbling about old movies has pretty much been Gene’s sole contribution to the Paracast for years; that and the ads every 10 minutes are the reasons I find it unbearable difficult to listen to anymore

The show has existed almost in spite of him. The best episodes were the early ones where he barely spoke up and Biedny took over most of the questioning, or the few when Chris actually had a chance to talk. Then it slowly became taking control of the conversation with sci-fi pop culture or goofy 'hey I remember Donald Kehoe/George Adamski and I remember when I had a job back 40 years ago I met ... ' type crap. He's the host equivalent of someone interrupting a conversation and pouring a bucket of cold water on the participants. I had to stop listening because the show got to the point you would be an hour in with all the ads, and Gene interrupting the guests to give some random trivia about when he actually used to work, or some Star Trek episode, and I'd had enough.

The guy needs to take a lesson from the George Knapp school of hosting. Do research on the subject matter, and the hosts job is to direct the conversation, not interrupting to stop the flow with some random crap because you have a little man complex to prove you know something, as irrelevant as it may be. A good drinking game would be to pull up a random episode and take a shot every time Gene makes some horrible joke or pop culture reference, or brings up Donald Kehoe.

"I only have one viable choice ...."

Find a rental for $700 or so instead of $1000+? Apply for positions at places that employ seniors, such as Wal-Mart? Sell your vehicle and get a junker or use public transit? Document your revenue and budget, and apply for public assistance?

"... which is to raise money to stay here and work out the problems."

Figures.
