Wouldn’t you do an internet search if a complete stranger was requesting that you send him money? I know I would. The bells and whistles would be going off if you searched on “Gene Steinberg.” People must be strangely lazy or worse.

I think when you listen to a person long enough it can create a false sense of intimacy. Back in the '90s, I knew Art Bell was probably not the world's greatest human being on many counts but, I listened to Coast to Coast often enough that I thought he was a pretty good guy. My guess is some people think Gene is their buddy who puts out the UFO podcast they like, and want to help him out.

But yeah even so, just giving on the basis of one email is weird. It's common for me to Google around a bit before donating to just about any cause, just to make sure it's legit. I mean I'll give to Red Cross disaster relief without that but, other stuff? Pays to check first. Of course.

I used to imagine Gene was to some extent counting on people getting that first email or two from him, assuming he was facing some temporary setback, and throwing him some cash to help out. But, he's been referring to his begging as an ongoing struggle for some time now. So, I dunno. It's all pretty damned peculiar.

Surely, the only success he has with this con nowadays is with new registrants to his forum. Yes, there are lots of gullible people out there who might give repeatedly. But people with that kind of credulity also tend to be people who just don't have the life skills to accumulate spare funds. Nah. It's all about the new meat. There ain't much of that in Gold Standard Land these days. So desperation is the order of the day (and there's plenty of desperation).

I think there's a chance he has a handful of people who keep giving him money. It's a version of the sunk cost fallacy. Or, think of the elderly people who routinely used to give more than they could afford to televangelists (I think that dynamic still exists out there, just in smaller numbers than back in the '80s).

dear Gene:
No one poached the fourms.
They all saw the truth. That you use the fourms as a mailing list for begging.
That your show is garbage.
You want the truth why your fourm is dead?
Look in the mirror ..

He seems to be admitting here that there is no other hope for him to change things:

There is no Plan B
Hello,

Once again I’m stuck.

I have to pay the motel by 11 AM today Arizona time or I’ll have no place to live.

There are other bills but, as usual, this is the most pressing.

Yes, I’m sick and tired of this routine, and I really hope that the things I’ve been doing will soon boost cash flow so I can get off this train and have a life.

In the meantime, are you able to send a donation today?

If you can please follow the usual process:

Login to: Send Money, Pay Online or Set Up a Merchant Account - PayPal, login and use the Send to friends and family option. Enter my email address, gene@technightowl.com, and click or tap Next to continue the transaction.

Thank you for reading and for your past support.

Peace,
Gene

Lol. This Mark guy wants to hear more of Gene's bloviating on pop culture bullshit. He wants Randallbot to "interview" Gene, the world's most boring parasite. I wonder if this kind of sycophancy is what got him a return visit on the Paracrud.

At this point in 2018 Gene was in his 1st apartment of 2018.
His mails were asking for rent money.
not much has changed since.
The hotel saga has been a boon for Gene. It allows for a constant crisis to be begged for. instead of having to pay every month or be evicted he now must pay every DAY or be on the streets.

Hello - I've been directed to your site via the Paracast forum. I didn't realise that there was quite so much controversy going on with respect to the Paracast. I was really into the scientific aspects of ufology many years ago, but the lack of any progress, the infighting and craziness turned me off big time back then. Recently (particularly following the release of that TicTack ufo video) I was curious as to whether matters had changed much and I chanced upon the Paracast - apparently the GoldStandard. Well it seems that not much has changed in the ufo field really - although the Paracast archive had some real gems from their earlier years. Recent programmes I've downloaded seemed pretty dire by contrast - so it seems to have run out of stream, hardly surprising after a decade or so of weekly episodes. The adverts seem much more pervasive than previously and the hosts not so engaging. But I guess as a free service run by unpaid volunteers then one can't really complain. I've also received some referrals to more scientific sites via forum members, so that was useful.
With respect to begging emails - I must say that I haven't received any at all myself. But going back through this forum here I must say I'm pretty shocked as they seem at variance with the fairly jovial demeanour of this host on the podcast itself. Anyway just some personal observations :)
