I picked up on that too. I won't mention the historical sense, but taking away ones humanity made it easier to sweep them under the rug if the need arose.

    Hey there,

I've been vague-following this issue for a couple years now, been intensely following it for the last few weeks.
    WOW. Just...just WOW.

I can't imagine being the other half of this situation. Okay sure, she's just got out of the hospital etc., but she has to know there's issues. There's no way you're evicted twice in three months and you're not aware that something is very, very wrong. And she's supposed to be younger than he is, right? And she's just...blithely going on and watching TV? She's not been actively trying to improve their situation?

Also. There's jobs out there where he would never have to leave the comfort of his home. There's work from home call center jobs out the wazoo, all he has to do is Google them. Customer Service Reps. They pay about $8 an hour to start with, depending on the company. There's online transcription work, one of the biggest legal transcription companies in the country is based out of Phoenix, actually. And if you get good enough, you can make decent money. Of course, he'd have to start at the bottom and work his way up, but if he's got good enough hearing to edit his shows, he could do transcription.

And I said all that to say this; my husband and I are raising two kids on about what he's making a month. We're in the Southeast. Of course, our cars are both paid for, and both of them are well over 10 years old, but you know, it's possible to live decently if you're willing to work.

Of course there are people who either don't have the education or the ability to get these jobs, people who don't have the internet connection or the knowledge to look for these kinds of jobs, but if he just wants to sit on his butt and talk, or listen (not that he does a lot of that anyway), these kinds of jobs are out there. I know.

At this point, though, anyone in the Phoenix area needs to start watching the exit ramps for an old guy with a sign and a little green man coffee cup...with a what, a VW Jetta discreetly parked about a hundred feet away...

Welcome to the forum and the endless saga of Gene Steinberg.

Steinberg's wife has been with him as long as I have been aware of his begging (12 years or more).

Given how long Steinberg has been conning people with his fake emergencies and constant begging I think the possibility that this is a new thing is extremely remote. He was probably doing it before she met him (if not all his life).

She has also been part of a previous begging scam where she was going to use donations to help her start a business.

There is absolutely no way she is not fully aware and complicit in what he has been doing - so I have no sympathy for her.

Of course there are and for anyone who actually wants to work they are not hard to find - the problem is that they all involve doing actual work and putting effort in order to get paid.

They don't pay you for doing nothing.

What has become clear over the last decade of begging is that Gene is not interested in doing any real work.

He just wants people to give him money without asking questions or expecting him to do anything.

He basically feels that other people should support him and that is his basic starting and end point. Anyone who questions that is labelled a hater or a stalker.

Even on his own podcast he usually finds someone else to do most of the work.

All Gene supplies is unfunny jokes and irrelevant references to his life in the 1960s (none of which have much to do with the show topics), as well as a black hole for 100% of the ad revenue and subscription money to go into (the cohosts get nothing).

Oh and he also uses a stopwatch to countdown the ad breaks (which incidentally ruin the flow of the show and have basically made the show unlistenable over the last few years).

The difference is that you want to work and pay your way. You are also satisfied to drive old cars and stay within your means.

Gene begs for money on the one hand and then uses it to buy new cars and tech while living in top class apartments which are way out the price range of someone who has no real job.

Then when he can't pay his rent (a frequent occurrence) it is someone else's problem (i.e. all the rest of us who have to put up with his insufferable begging).

Gene could easily do most of these low paid jobs. He just refuses to. No matter what has been suggested to him he always has some excuse why he can't do it. He has said to several people in the past (in rare moments of honesty) that that kind of work is beneath him and he therefore won't even consider it.

    Will never happen.

Gene has always been "on the brink" of being on the street but somehow he always ends up living in a new apartment - who keeps renting accommodation to him when he always gets evicted for not paying rent is one of those amazing mysteries that nobody has yet solved.

Also there is no need for him to beg on the street, he has the email lists for his podcasts to beg on. He also begs guests and pretty much anyone he comes across directly (as his previous cohosts have discussed in the past).

Why stand on a street corner with a cup - when he can use his podcasts and beg from the comfort of his own home?

What I don't understand is, what the hell has this guy done for his entire life?

We know he's done his UFO and Apple podcasts. Then before that in the 90s was a Usenet snob defending AOL and writing rudimentary how-to books for AOL on Mac. And then you have to go WAY before that to the 60s when he apparently knew Jim Mosely, which consists about 90% of his field 'knowledge', and wrote a homemade UFO magazine.

Seriously, what the hell was this guy doing in the 70s and 80s and much of the 90s? It wouldn't surprise me to see some sort of longterm criminal or civil record in this guy's past.

I'm not sure of any position, having no education or work history, that is beneath this guy.

He's mentioned being a radio DJ on the show before. Maybe he did some ad voiceovers at some point, maybe he worked for a small station at some point...other than that, I really don't know.

Steinberg has said he was a DJ in Pennsylvania for a period of time. He then jumped on the Apple bandwagon and wrote how-to books and did reviews of Apple software and hardware. God only knows how little money that brought in.

As far as his wife is concerned, someone I trust told me she is not the sharpest tack in the pack. She just basically goes along with all his nonsense. It’s probably too late for her to back out and move on.

Good question; I thought I had read that he was a journalist of some sort in those eras. He allegedly had some sort of more formal job at one point since he told either Jeff Ritzmann or Jeremy Vaeni (or both?) he was fired from it for asking a co-worker for money.

Oh! Well you mentioned his Usenet reign of terror... he was writing on audio components and such then, I remember reading... I think maybe for Stereo Review, or the like. I guess he was an audiophile of some sort. Whatever the Usenet group was where he flaunted his opinions didn't seem to rate him too high but, so it goes.

But yeah, Gene in the late '70s and '80s, early '90s, I dunno. Possibly worth mentioning his presumed ex-wife on Facebook doesn't seem to recognize he has a problem with begging when he whines about trolls, Internet stalkers and the "online hate pack".

IIRC Biedny characterized her as being "not altogether there". I assumed that he was basing that on Gene's characterizations of her but do not know.

I suspect he has been conning people to get money one way or the other all his life. That may be why he can't stop, indeed he may be so desensitised to doing it that he may not actually see anything wrong with it.

This might also explain why he feels unfairly persecuted for doing something that looks at best distasteful to others if not outright criminal.

To him, perhaps, that is his job and his profession - dysfunctional and immoral as that may seem to most normal people.

Remember this guy hung around with Jim Mosely who was not exactly an ethical person himself. Mosley would do anything for a "prank" no matter how disgusting, Steinberg will do the same for money.

Not a huge surprise if it is true. It would also confirm that this kind of thing goes back beyond the 12 years we know of.

Yes she seems to back him 100% which is bizarre in itself even if he wasn't a conning scumbag.

Murphy can’t bring himself to say ‘Gene Steinberg.’ Instead he refers to ‘The Paracast’ instead. Dr. Joseph Goebbels would be proud of Murphy’s propaganda style.

I can confirm from personal knowledge that the begging and "borrowing" with no intent to repay has gone on for at least 25 years although it was not internet based at the start.

It may well be that the instruction is coming from Gene himself to use this strategy as it seems Randall will do anything Gene says in return for getting a moderator sash and a little bit of power on a dead forum.

Gene himself has previously tried to blur the line between himself and the show by conflating his personal begging with how other podcasts ask for donations.

Clearly to any right thinking person this is ludicrous.

Gene asks for donations because he is always in some personal crisis (e.g. eviction) not to help with the show (which is what other podcasts do).

If he is trying to use this as some kind of show monetisation it is fraud.

Plus Gene already gets money for the show from advertising and subscriptions. Those are already "donations" towards the show. If those aren't enough he needs to make an effort to make his show better so that legitimate revenue will increase or he needs to find other work.

It is not an excuse for trying to obtain money through fraud.

Anyway this is all clear to any rational person who doesn't think in terms of conning people or doesn't have his head up Lord Gene of Steinberg's backside.

Scammers tend to like creating confusion and bending the truth. It allows them to what they want to do whilst getting others to argue with each other over technicalities.

Remember when Randall was posting here he was trying to portray Gene's begging as some kind of unconventional way to monetise the show?

Seems to be an evolution of the previous excuse that Gene has tried to spin.

Whilst it is possible that he spontaneously came up with the strategy, it is also quite possible that he was instructed to do that.

I really would not put it past Gene and it seems that Randall will do and think as he is told in return for being a moderator.

Randall is so full of shyte, what little respect for him I had has vanished as he seems to justify and reason Gene's financial scams as a just and proper endeavour...He cannot even see the reality of the situation or refuses to, I think he just ignores all the details and blindly accepts the situation as something righteous...At least this is the way I see it, ignorance is certainly bliss in his mind...

    The justification continues:

There's a word for his justifications...

1- A person who uses deceptive reasoning to win debates or discussions.
2- A person who reasons with clever but fallacious arguments.

Pretty ironic Gene and others are smugly declaring "Doxing" in that thread, when Gene is the idiot who doxed someone on his own forum not so long ago. He posted the home phone number of the parents of the guy who sent him 88,000 dongs or whatever it was, along with other contact info for that person. In a sense Gene even doxed himself when he tweeted out his address, phone number, and bank account info back in March. Gene-ius.

Sharing Gene's bankruptcy info, which is a public record, doesn't really bother me. Should it? I think it's in the nature of crowd sourced investigation into someone who has been deceptive. Technically I think it qualifies as doxing though. Should it bother me? It's not inviting harm to Gene. Possibly I should be critical but am not in his case. Hm.
