The Grootslang is a legendary cryptid said to dwell in a deep cave in the Richtersveld (a desert), South Africa.

According to legend, the Grootslang is a primordial creature as old as the world itself. Tales state that gods (who were new to the crafting of things) made a terrible mistake in the Grootslang's creation, and gave it tremendous strength, cunning, and intellect. Realizing their mistake, the gods split the Grootslang into separate creatures and thus created the first elephants and the first snakes. It is claimed to devour elephants by luring them into its cave. The cave is known as the "Wonder Hole" or the "Bottomless Pit". According to local legend, the cave is filled with diamonds.

In Benin (west African country), it is said to be a huge elephant-like creature with a serpent's tail. Also according to the tale, Grootslangs covet gems, particularly diamonds, and despite the creature's lust for cruelty, victims can often bargain for their freedom by offering a Grootslang enough precious gems.

While searching for treasure in the Richtersveld of South Africa in 1917, English businessman Peter Grayson disappeared after members of his party were attacked and injured by lions, prompting legends that the Grootslang had killed him thereof.

The village of Sanddrift has breathtaking views of the Richtersveld’s natural beauty. This is a truly fascinating, culturally diverse village, and here you'll hear many stories of the Wondergate (Wonder cave) and the creature that lurks within. Wondergat, or Heitsi Eibib as known by the Nama people, means “spirit” or “emptiness”. This hole connects to the sea, which is some 40 miles away, and is also supposedly filled with diamonds. The Wondergat is a limestone sinkhole and has a deep shaft leading straight down into the earth. It is almost perfectly circular and about 4.5 meters in diameter. The vertical part is about 20 meters deep and the tunnel then goes much further down at an angle. This Bottomless Pit is celebrated in the folklore and mythological tales of the indigenous people.

Natives say the Grootslang is a spirit snake whose job is to guard the cavern from treasure hunters. Belched up from the depths of hell to protect the Richtersveld treasure. Anyone unlucky enough to encounter the creature is instantly overcome by a sense of evil, according to Dr. Guenter Beck, a wildlife official in the Richtersveld region.

I'd love to chase all these monsters and see if they're myth or real...just need the right people. And money.

I've never heard of it either. Sounds like some sort of weird thing that should be involved with Krampus.
