Handy Hints and Hacks

A thread for those Handy Hints and Hacks which can make everyday life simpler.

This is one of my favourite hacks by the youtuber, CrazyRussianHacker... He's really good value, has some pretty amazing hacks, has a quaint accent and can't pronounce a number of the words in English properly which makes his videos all the more fun and entertaining to watch...

This hack totally changed my aluminium foil and plastic cling wrap ripping life - Until I watched that, I've been doing it wrong all my life... I had no idea about those tabs on the sides of the box though I have found that not all have them, mostly the cheaper foil brands...

Love some of his pyromaniac hacks, especially when he says, 'Do not try this at home' and then he gives you blow by blow instructions on how to do them... The classic being, when saying, 'Safety is number one priority' while taking minimal precautions in the clothing he wears (mostly only puts his sunglasses on) as well as with some of his actions.

Get Rid of Stinky Shoes with Dryer Sheets

Let's face it: all of us have stinky shoes at one time or another. That problem can be easily remedied with a simple dryer sheet: just put half of a standard sheet in each shoe overnight, and your shoes will be smelling fresh as springtime (well, at least better than before) by morning.

I used aluminum foil and stale coke to clean the chrome on my bikes.

Whenever you make burgers at home add an egg or half an egg into your ground meat, it will help hold your burger together while it cooks and adds to the flavour...

Whip the egg in a bowl separately first to blend it well and then add an amount to the meat proportionate to the quantity of burgers you're cooking...

Smartphone tips...

Cable protection

Wrap the spring from and old pen around the end of your charger cable to stabilize it. This will prevent it from breaking.

Bad reception

If you notice that your cell reception is poor, try putting your phone in airplane or offline mode. After a few seconds switch back to normal mode and your smartphone will connect with the closest cell tower.

Wake-up call

Having trouble waking up in the morning? Try setting the alarm on your smartphone and then placing it in an empty glass beside your bed. This amplifies the alarm so much that even the heaviest sleepers don't stand a chance.

Save your battery

GPS apps use a lot of energy and can drain your battery quickly. To avoid this you can simply program your route, take some screenshots and then use those, instead of running the GPS through the entire trip.

Faster charging

Switching your phone to airplane or offline mode will allow it to charge much more quickly.

Makeshift stand

If you like to watch videos on your smartphone, you might want to use a stand. In this case, a pair of sunglasses or old cassette tape cover works just as well. (Who knew we'd have a new use for tape cases?)

Watch your step

If you absolutely have to text while you're walking down the street, you should probably consider the App Type N Walk.

It activates the front camera on your phone and displays the path ahead of you on the background of your smartphone screen so you can see if any danger lies ahead.

Secret hiding place

Stick a bill or two in your smartphone cover and you won't be left penniless if you forget your wallet or purse as you're walking out the door. Or, in the worst case scenario, if they get stolen!

I though the cure for a bad reception was to get more booze.

The bill in the case is a handy trick, that lets you lose money and your phone at the same time.
