Bear in mind the scientists who studied this first hand differs in your opinion and state that region is overdue and have a higher percentage of probability of an earthquake because it is overdue...

13-year Cascadia study complete - and earthquake risk looms large

Turbidite Event History—Methods and Implications for Holocene Paleoseismicity of the Cascadia Subduction Zone

...

Thank you.......I'm aware of these studies that are predicting the Cascadia to rupture in the near future.

I'm also aware that there are preparations to help rescue as many as possible on the coast. I think this is a very good idea and should be done as quickly as possible. They have some very good ideas in place.

I was just saying that the Cascadia zone didn't rupture for over 900 years as posted earlier.......the term "overdue" is used far to often.

What scares me is that I had never even heard of the Cascadia Subduction Zone until last week. I think most people outside of the effected area are not familiar with it.

Besides the obvious tragedy of fatalities and injuries, it would probably push the US into a major economic downturn that could last for years.

I was born out that way so don't feel bad.......and remember a 6.5 earthquake when I was a kid. I've been interested in earthquakes for quite sometime......even though its not my primary field of study in geology.

I didn't know about the New Madrid Seismic Zone until I did some work out in the middle of it just north of New Madrid.

The People's Almanac had a really good section about the New Madrid Zone back in the 1970s. That was before the internet and cable TV when nerdy kids had to actually read books to get their info. x23

That's how I did it in college....lol......having to go the actual libraries.

Amazing drone footage lava rivers in Hawaii 2018. Everything about the volcanic eruption on the Big Island of Hawaii is huge. Like this colossal river of lava, hundreds of meters across. Flowing eight miles from the vent to the ocean. The volume of lava spewing from fissure 8 is 26,000 gallons a second, which is the same as 10 acres of land covered by 30 feet of lava every minute.

The Kilauea Volcano continues to create new problems as lava spreads across parts of Hawaii’s Big Island. Among the volcano’s many active cracks and lava streams, Fissure 8 not only continues to release waves of rapidly moving lava, but has become even more dangerous thanks to heightened ranges of splatter and lava balls that continue to fly into the air.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) provided an update on the Kilauea Volcano Saturday. Fountains of lava shot into the air from Fissure 8 reaching as high as 180 feet. The molten rock flowing from the fissure created small, intermittent overflows that only last for a short period of time. As is the case with the Kilauea volcano, new formations and objects appear due to lava cooling, hence the appearance of the accretionary lava ball.

I wonder if the passengers are asked to sign a release of liability form before boarding the boat.

I would.......but in this case it sounds like a simple case of ignorance as it was the last time the boats got to close.

Then again I'd lose the boat owners if I was an insurance company.

A small island formed off the coast of Hawaii then turned into an isthmus.
A Lava Island Comes Into Being, For a Few Days
Last week, a small new island was born. It fit the major criteria—surrounded by water and smaller than a continent. The island emerged just a few yards off the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, formed by the lava that’s been pouring from Kīlauea since May.

Just a few days later, the small island had transformed. By Monday, July 16, according to the USGS, it had become an isthmus.

The island formed near the northern end of the area where lava from a productive fissure has been flowing into the ocean. USGS observers first reported the island’s existence on Friday, when they described it as “a small island…just offshore the northern edge that continues to ooze lava.” At the coast, the lava continues to flow underwater, and most likely, USGS said, the island was formed by pressure in that submerged flow, which pushed a hump of lava up above the water level.

Here's some images of the hole the lava bomb put in the boat described in post 311.
