I know where you were and what it looked like back then. I have been to the OC Fairgrounds several times for gun shows back in the 80s and started doing service calls out in that area in the 90s - as well as many, many others. I covered a
lot of territory. You are absolutely right, there was very little out there then. Nothing to cause light pollution or a light show hours
after the concert ended.
I lived in Fishkill for several years in the early 90s close to the Rt.9/I84 interchange. They put up a Mobil gas station that was the first 'super gas station convenience store' sort of thing in the area out in the middle of nowhere. When they lit up the lights on the island for the first time not all the roof panels were in place. I remember that very clearly - I thought the sky had cracked and Armageddon had arrived. As odd as that looked at no point was anyone calling in to the police reporting UFOs, it was something we were all commenting on the next morning at the delis we got breakfast at.
I suppose I can understand why the police or newspapers blew this off as concert lights - low hanging fruit. What else could they say?
There is an historical marker for Edmund Lloyd that's about where Smoothie King is off 211 now on the map. Next to Edmund S Lloyd Way and Lloyd Dr. Go figure.

You were less than a mile NW up on that hilly ridge. NW of where you were the terrain changes as you head into Sullivan County. Meaning there wasn't anything up in that direction to cause what you saw because there wasn't much of anything
at all up there, still isn't. Looking south from there is I84 and also a whole lot of nothing, it's just flatter terrain.
I take it for granted you can identify aircraft, especially those operating from SWF and no I don't think this was anything to do with that at all.
What I can say about that is what I have observed directly as a lifelong resident - lighting and weather conditions means that you may not hear anything at all and the recognition lights aren't always identifiable. Somewhere in AE I got a pic of a weird looking light that appeared to be hovering over a field. I was driving to work predawn and saw it and pulled over to watch. Aircraft approaching, once I was at a slight angle to it I recognized it. I live next to an airport and am used to it but know that must catch people by surprise.
I think you and others were seeing High Strange objects in the area and those interest me. Flogging the myth created by two frauds doesn't.
I'd head back over to Thrall again if either of us ever come up with a thread to follow. I left my contact info over there with one of their staff. It'll probably amount to nothing but I've had good luck just striking up conversations with people, you never know what they might have to say.
