Stronger Tropical Storm Cristobal makes landfall, projected to head north, hit Gulf Coast by Sunday

Tropical Storm Cristobal increased strength overnight and made landfall in Mexico Wednesday morning, but is expected to venture north into the Gulf of Mexico, regain strength and target the Gulf Coast of the U.S. this weekend.

Reports from an Air Force Reserve Unit Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicated the storm made landfall near Atasta, Mexico to the west of Ciudad del Carmen at 9:35 EDT. with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

Parts of Mexico and Central America have already seen heavy flooding with up to 25 inches of rainfall. A tropical storm warning is in effect along the coast of Mexico from Campeche west to Puerto de Veracruz.

Forecasters expect the storm, which has tropical-storm-force winds extending out 60 miles from its center, to only lose strength as its center crosses over land today and Thursday.

Tropical Storm Cristobal to make landfall on central Gulf Coast of US by Sunday evening

After Cristobal regained tropical storm status on Friday, the storm gained more strength over warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday. The storm has its sights set on the Gulf coast of the United States, where tropical storm and storm surge warnings were in effect.

Not only is Cristobal the earliest third named tropical storm system on record in the Atlantic Basin, the Atlantic National Hurricane Center forecast has it tracking further west across Wisconsin than any other post-tropical system on record since the mid-1800s.

On Sunday morning, the National Weather Service reported most gusts on land are still in the 25 mph to 35 mph range, however, a few tropical storm force gusts were reported as rain bands move toward the southeast Louisiana area as well as coastal Mississippi.

A storm surge warning was in effect on Sunday morning from the Mouth of the Mississippi River eastward to Ocean Springs with 3 to 5 feet of inundation expected within the warning area.

There is an increased risk for tornadoes in extreme southeastern Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southern Alabama into Sunday afternoon as Cristobal approaches the coast. A tornado watch has been issued for this area through 5 p.m., CDT.

According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Courtney Travis, the potential for a few tornadoes to develop in this region will remain through Sunday night, mainly east of the circulation center of Cristobal.
