Some Speculations that Interstellar Asteroid was a Spaceship

Shortly after the announcement that the interstellar object, now named ‘Oumuamua, which visited our solar system last month was oddly cylindrical in shape, speculation arose on reddit and other places that it could have actually been a spaceship, possibly one traveling for millions of years and not necessarily occupied anymore.

“An interstellar ship could maybe possibly be using an Alcubierre drive” (a theoretical faster-than-light idea using negative mass) and others speculated that its shape resembles a booster drive discarded after usage.

Over at Science Fiction & Fantasy Stack Exchange, someone compared the shape and spinning of ‘Oumuamua to that of Rama, the spaceship in Arthur C. Clarke’s sci-fi novel, Rendezvous with Rama, which was 50 km long by 16 km wide (31 by 10 miles – much bigger that the 400 meter long ‘Oumuamua) which had a 0.25 rpm spin to provide artificial gravity.

An interesting comment by A.C. Charania (@ac_charania) refers to a paper he wrote in 2008 called “Dyson Asteroid Shells: Hollow Worlds from the Outside-In” which proposes creating “a human asteroid habitat” by “enclosing a small body such as an asteroid (potentially focused on rubble pile compositions) in a rigid or semi-rigid shell” he calls a “Dyson Asteroid Shell.” His drawings suggest a cylindrical shape might be better for space travel. Did some alien civilization beat him to it? Is this more plausible than Tabby’s star and the Dyson sphere?

Unfortunately, our measly Earth rockets couldn’t catch up to ‘Oumuamua to do a landing, intercept or visual inspection. In fact, the main ‘visual’ we have of it so far is an artist’s rendition which makes it look like a long pointed rock. A conspiracy theorist might wonder if it was intentionally drawn that way to hide its real identity from the public.

Will we ever know if ‘Oumuamua was a spaceship? Probably not. Our best bet, now that we know these oddly-shaped intergalactic asteroids exist, is to watch for more and get better pictures instead of relying on drawings.

And, while ‘weird space rock’ is still leading in the polls, it’s always nice to have an opportunity to bring up Arthur C. Clarke and his fascinating and prescient novels.

Nice....is this another thread on the elongated asteroid?

We don't know for sure it was an asteroid, the above picture is the best image we have of it, which is a speck of light...Fact is we do not know what it was...

So they don't even know if it is elongated?.....didn't you post an image of it in the other thread?

That was an artist's rendition, not a real photo...

I love the internet. I've only been using it for 7 years and now, I can't imagine my life without it.

    Thanks, Nivek. :)

So now there's a serious study to find out if this visitor was an alien space craft or probe...Its still within reach of out telescopes and listening devices, but not for much longer...

Has an alien probe entered our solar system? Cigar-shaped interstellar 'comet' Oumuamua is being investigated for signs of extraterrestrial technology

Astronomers are set to scan an 'alien' comet for signs of extraterrestrial technology.

The cigar-shaped asteroid, named 'Oumuamua by its discoverers, sailed past Earth last month and is the first interstellar object seen in the solar system.

A team of alien-hunting scientists, led by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, will scan the comet this week before it sails beyond the reach of Earth's telescopes.

They say they are looking for radio signals, claiming the mysterious visitor could be an alien spaceship.

'Researchers working on long-distance space transportation have previously suggested that a cigar or needle shape is the most likely architecture for an interstellar spacecraft, since this would minimise friction and damage from interstellar gas and dust,' the research firm said in a statement.

Milner and his team want to measure the object before it extends beyond the reach of Earthbound scanning equipment.

The object will fly past Jupiter next year, and will hurtle beyond Pluto by the 2020s.

'Whether it's artificial or not, we will definitely know more about this object,' Milner told the Atlantic.

Oumuamua, also known as Comet C/2017 U1, baffled scientists when it flew past Earth at breakneck speed in November.

Here's part of the statement from the link in the previous post...

‘Oumuamua is now about 2 astronomical units (AU) away, or twice the distance between Earth and the Sun. This is closer by a factor of 50-70 than the most distant human artifact, the Voyager I spacecraft.

At this distance, it would take under a minute for the Green Bank instrument to detect an omnidirectional transmitter with the power of a cellphone.

“‘Oumuamua’s presence within our solar system affords Breakthrough Listen an opportunity to reach unprecedented sensitivities to possible artificial transmitters and demonstrate our ability to track nearby, fast-moving objects,” said Listen’s Andrew Siemion, Director of Berkeley SETI Research Center. Whether this object turns out to be artificial or natural, it’s a great target for Listen.”

Breakthrough Listen is a scientific program in search for evidence of technological life in the Universe. It aims to survey one million nearby stars, the entire galactic plane and 100 nearby galaxies at a wide range of radio and optical bands.

NASA has stated that it was a complex shape.

On searching for Oumuamua I get this:

    And this:

Both are complex shapes but the 2nd is more likely.

The ion cannon, HVW tubes, jump drive, and subspace drive system are pretty obvious.

But it does look like a derelict that has seen better days.

My guess is the "asteriod" is a light scout ship of some kind.

Sounds like the Alien Whale Probe that came to Earth in the movie Star IV The Voyage Home.

Whales carry the memory of the planet. Enki had to commune with them to get permission to mine gold. He spent so much time with them he partially turned into a fish.

I'll be curious to read the data they collect from that further study into this probe, the more I read about it the more I think it is a probe of some sort...

The idea of using asteroids as spaceships goes back some time. Maybe aliens used this natural way ( asteroids) of space reconnaissance eons ago. No need for construction just hollow it out or strap a transdimentional blink drive engine to it.

They do not know if it is really an asteroid or comet, they know roughly it's shape which is unusual for an asteroid or comet...

Wouldn't a comet have a tail ? Was this thing anywhere near the sun ?
