When you think about it....

A saucer that burns the ground would not be very practical... any saucer tech likely doesn't use destructive forces for propulsion.

More likely a military experiment... probably a powerful laser experiment from space, or a test of optical equipment on satellites to see if they could detect the subtle differences in soil texture.
