New York skier turns up six days later 2,900 MILES away in Sacramento in the same ski gear, with a new iPhone, a new haircut - and all he knows is he was a passenger in a 'big truck'

  • Constantinos 'Danny' Filippidis was reported missing from Whiteface Mountain
  • The intermediate lever skier went out alone 'for one more run' but then vanished
  • His disappearance prompted a huge search of the area including helicopters
  • After six days, the 49-year-old turned up at Sacramento International Airport
  • He had a new iPhone, a new haircut and little memory of what had happened
  • The Toronto firefighter called his wife and 911, and is now receiving medical care
  • He told deputies he'd had a ride in a 'big-style truck and slept a lot'
  • Filippidis did not have a history of mental illness or substance abuse

'He related to the officers that he had been skiing in New York, he believed he had hit his head or had been hit in the head,' Hampton said, according to WCAX3.

'He said he was dropped off by a truck driver. He said he slept a lot during the trip here and he didn't have a lot of recollection of how he got from A to B.'

Police released the new photo of Filippidis in an appeal to anyone who might have seen Filippidis during the time he was missing. Anyone who saw Filippidis between Feb. 7 and Feb. 13 is asked to call New York State Police at 518-873-2750.

Before Tuesday, police said they had no reason to believe Filippidis was not on the mountain..

Somehow he got a new iPhone, if it was planted on him he should know to check out all his contacts and data he had stored, see if it's all there or if it's a clean slate phone...Maybe even pictures of him on that phone during the time of disappearance...

Would his cell provider have a record of his trip? Wouldn't you want to first phone a family member? I guess a big truck means a semi.

Current thinking on this story (don't have link), is he suffered head trauma from a fall and crawled into a truck for protection from the cold that headed west.
