Huge blow to Rishi Sunak as former leadership rival throws his support behind Liz Truss

Former Tory leadership contender Tom Tugendhat has endorsed Liz Truss in the race to be prime minister, in a huge blow to Rishi Sunak.

Writing in The Times, Mr Tugendhat said that the foreign secretary's promises of tax cuts are based on "true Conservative principles" and that she can unite the party.

He said: "Liz has always stood up for British values at home, and abroad. With her at the helm, I have no doubt that we will move with determination to make this country safer and more secure."

Mr Tugendhat had pitched himself as the outsider who could make a clean break with a party mired in sleaze and scandal. But he was knocked out of the leadership contest in the third round of MPs' voting earlier this month.

The former soldier, who is chairman of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, said that after watching the candidates go head-to-head in live TV debates, "only one has convinced me she's ready".

He said both contenders have "huge qualities and many talents" but that Ms Truss has an advantage on the world stage because of her cabinet position.

Mr Tugendhat said the world "is getting more challenging" as fuel prices rise across the globe, and that we need a leader "with the foreign affairs experience to build alliances and keep our country safe".

He said: "That's where allies come in. As foreign secretary, Liz is starting with a huge advantage. She can make our voice count."

Mr Tugendhat has become the latest high-profile Tory to back Ms Truss.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace gave his backing to Ms Truss on Thursday night, describing her as "authentic, honest and experienced".

Mexico braces for impact! China's out-of-control 23-ton rocket booster could slam into Cabo San Lucas resort TODAY - but experts say uncontrolled re-entry into Pacific is most likely

China's wayward 23-ton rocket booster will plunge back to Earth today

The re-entry window of the space debris has narrowed as its orbit decays, and it is no longer possible for the rocket booster stage to fall into the atmosphere over the United States. However, populated areas in Mexico, including the Baja California peninsula near Cabo San Lucas, as well as parts of South America and Southeast Asia remain under the potential re-entry path, according to the latest assessment from the Aerospace Corporation. The falling space junk is the 23-ton booster stage of the Long March 5B-Y3 rocket - China's most powerful - that was launched on July 24 to deliver the Wentian module to China's Tiangong Space Station.

Yeah. There's definitely a lot of hoaxing and faking going around.
I was sceptical of this one because there was no link to the article's webpage on the Atlantic domain, just a supposed screenshot. Most Americans will feel tax pain from Dem inflation bill despite Biden's past promises: analysis

(Excerpt)

The vast majority of Americans will pay more in taxes as a result of Democrats' inflation bill despite President Biden's pledge not to raise taxes on those making under $400,000 per year.

The Inflation Reduction Act — unveiled Wednesday by Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and endorsed by Biden — would increase tax revenue by $16.7 billion from Americans earning less than $200,000 a year, according to a nonpartisan analysis from the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) published Friday. Nearly every tax bracket would pay more in taxes with those making below $10,000 per year seeing the largest uptick, the analysis showed.

"The more this bill is analyzed by impartial experts, the more we can see Democrats are trying to sell the American people a bill of goods," Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, said in a statement Saturday. "Non-partisan analysts are confirming this bill raises taxes on the middle class and produces no meaningful deficit reduction when gimmicks are removed and the full cost is accounted for."

"This bill will not raise taxes on anyone making less than $400,000 a year," Biden remarked Thursday during a speech about the legislation. "And I promise — a promise I made during the campaign and one which that I ha- — that I’ve have kept."

In 2023, the year in which the legislation would increase tax revenue most, individuals making less than $10,000 per year would pay 3.1% more in taxes and those making between $20,000-30,000 per year would see a 1.1% tax increase, the JCT analysis showed. Tax revenue collected from those making $100,000 per year or less would increase by $5.8 billion in 2023 under the Inflation Reduction Act.

In addition, the share of tax revenue collected from all Americans making more than $200,000 per year would remain at the current percentage, according to the JCT. Taxpayers with an annual income of $200,000 or greater pay more than 57% of all federal income taxes.

These states are sending residents stimulus checks up to $1,500 to combat inflation

Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that low-income families in the state will receive checks worth $450 per child, in an effort to ease the toll decades-high inflation is taking on household bottom lines.

Florida joins more than a dozen other states that have implemented some type of relief effort as ever-increasing prices batter household budgets across the country.

The stimulus efforts vary by state, but include one-time payments, tax refunds, tax credits, and suspending gas taxes.

Inflation soared 9.1% in June compared to a year ago, continuing an expensive trend that’s been hammering households for a year. Gas, housing, and food prices have been especially burdensome, though drivers seem to be finally getting some relief at the pump.

Many states, including Florida, are using surplus funds from federal COVID-19 aid packages to fund stimulus efforts. The measures are often included in state budget proposals, which means residents will have to wait a few months for the relief.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the state stimulus efforts so far.

This is election fraud...

ABC panel criticizes Democrats meddling in GOP primaries: 'Embarrassingly hypocritical'

Democrats have spent millions boosting GOP candidates they deem to be unelectable in the general election. ABC's Jonathan Karl, USA Today's Susan Page and other panelists slammed Democrats meddling in Republican primaries on Sunday, saying that it was "hypocritical" and "risky."

It appears the Democratic party could be meddling, I've been seeing the news from many states stating that a Trump-backed candidate is winning or has won the GOP primary in that state and is moving up to the general election to face a Democrat opponent in November...There have been a number of wins for Trump-backed candidates so far, I don't know an exact number but there have been a few...

Capitol Police raises questions with job listing to hire own federal prosecutors: 'Who signed off on this?'

A new listing on a federal government job board is raising constitutional questions, as Capitol Police are looking to hire their own prosecutors.

The listing for an attorney position, posted July 29 on USAJobs.gov, says in the description that the employee would "serve as a Special Assistant United States Attorney" in the Capitol Police's District Offices. The salary is between $145,094 and $186,368 per year.

"This position is to represent the United States Government primarily prosecuting individuals and/or groups who have engaged in threats and/or acts of violence against Members of Congress, their staffs, United States Capitol Police employees, visitors to the Capitol complex, and facilities and properties within the Capitol Complex," the listing says.

Notably, the agency listed for the prosecutor's job is the Capitol Police, not the Department of Justice. Therein lies the problem, according to Mike Davis, founder of the Article 3 Project.

"It is constitutionally wrong to have prosecutors report to law enforcement. It should be the other way around," Davis said.

Posing a greater problem, Davis said, is that the leadership of the Capitol Police is a three-person board that includes the House and Senate Sergeants-at-Arms — who are nominated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

"This is clearly unconstitutional to have federal prosecutors working for Speaker Pelosi and Chuck Schumer in Congress," Davis said, since prosecution falls under the Executive Branch, not Congress. He also noted how special prosecutors often have a tremendous amount of autonomy.

"They're going to be able to do whatever they hell they want," Davis said.
