Jackson gay rights leader accused of burning down own home

When the home of Nikki Joly burned down in 2017, killing five pets, the FBI investigated it as a hate crime.

After all, the transgender man and gay rights activist had received threats after having a banner year in this conservative town.

In the prior six months, he helped open the city’s first gay community center, organized the first gay festival and, after 18 years of failed attempts, helped lead a bruising battle for an ordinance that prohibits discrimination against gays.

For his efforts, a local paper named him the Citizen of the Year.

Authorities later determined the fire was intentionally set, but the person they arrested came as a shock to both supporters and opponents of the gay rights movement. It was the citizen of the year — Nikki Joly.

“It’s embarrassing,” said Travis Trombley, a gay resident who fought for the ordinance. “How do you do it to the community you have put so much effort into helping?”

Why Joly, 54, would allegedly burn down his home remains a mystery. He didn’t own the house, which was insured by its owner, police said.

His attorney said the lack of a motive cast doubt on the case.

Meanwhile, a police investigative report suggests a possible reason for the fire.

Two people who worked with Joly at St. Johns United Church of Christ, where the Jackson Pride Center was located, said he had been frustrated the controversy over gay rights had died down with the passage of the nondiscrimination law, according to the report.

The church officials, Barbara Shelton and Bobby James, when asked by police about a possible motive for the fire, said Joly was disappointed the Jackson Pride Parade and Festival, held five days before the blaze, hadn’t received more attention or protests.

Contacted by a reporter, James declined to comment. But Shelton quibbled with the way police characterized her remarks, saying she had no idea if Joly was frustrated by the lack of controversy.

“Not sure I said that,” she wrote in an email. “I have no idea about anything, never heard Nikki comment in any fashion about anything like that."

Joly's attorney, Daniel Barnett of Grand Rapids, said his client already had lots of attention for his gay rights activism, and wasn't looking for more.

“It doesn’t make sense,” he said. “He was citizen of the year. There was plenty of media coverage already before the fire.”

A hearing to file motions in the case is scheduled for March 8 in Jackson County Circuit Court.

I think socially and psychologically many people cannot deal with things in rational ways because of technology...Not blaming technology but it is its rapid development that is outpacing and dragging along many social elements of society and personal lives of many with its rapid growth and development thereby also becoming too invasive too quickly in the lives of many people...

Could this Japanese herb be the secret to slowing down ageing? 'Tomorrow's leaf' eaten by SAMURAI is found to clear out disease-causing cells
  • Ashitaba plant contains a compound that prolongs the life of flies and worms
  • It protected against ageing in mice and human cells with 'clear out' processes
  • The plant could become useful in alternative therapies for ageing, scientists said
  • The compound, DMC, is not naturally found anywhere else to their knowledge

A Japanese plant traditionally eaten by samurai warriors could hold the secret to anti-ageing, scientists claim.

The ashitaba plant has been used to aid wound healing and prevent infectin, and is known as 'tomorrow's leaf' because it grows back so quickly after being cut.

Now, a unique natural compound in the plant has been found to help protect cells and delay ageing in various species and in human cells.

It works by encouraging a 'cleansing and recycling' process in cells, removing unwanted cells that can cause disease if allowed to build up.

Researchers said it is a step towards identifying anti-ageing therapies which don't require people to stick to beneficial but often loathsome diets and habits.

'They treat you like a customer, not a patient': Texas man reveals his thrifty plan to spend his 'Golden Years' living in a $58 per night Holiday Inn instead of a retirement home where the average cost is $188 per day

Terry Robison, 64, who lives in Spring, Texas, made his plans universally known in a public Facebook post. Robison has done the math and says staying in a Holiday Inn would save over $100 a day compared to the average cost of living in a nursing home. His post lists all the benefits of living in a Holiday Inn including free breakfasts, toiletries and leisure facilities.

Technology is becoming more and more 'in your face', and people need a break but instead get caught up in the whatever the touch screen technology is displaying, the blue light in their faces for more hours per day than the sunlight...People need a break to relax, recharge, refresh but so many get little to none of that causing over time irrational behaviour...

WTF?...She is American not Pakistani...So Twitter is muslim controlled?...

Twitter Legal Warns Michelle Malkin Her ‘Mohammed Cartoon Tweet’ Violates “Pakistan’s Blasphemy Laws” – Which Are Punishable by Prison or Death

Twitter legal sent Michelle Malkin a warning last week that her Mohammed cartoon tweet violated Pakistan’s “blasphemy laws.”

The specific blasphemy laws Michelle Malkin violated are punishable by life imprisonment or death and Twitter happily delivered the death threat to her.

“I’ve been #SiliconValleySharia -ed. Here’s the notice Twitter’s legal dept sent me last week, warning me to get legal counsel because anti-blasphemy Muslim zealots complained that my Mohammed Cartoons tweet violates Pakistan’s laws,” Malkin said in a tweet on Wednesday with a screenshot of the warning.

Michelle Malkin then stated that she responded to Twitter’s legal team seeking answers.

“I have written to Twitter’s legal & media relations departments seeking answers and comment on why American citizens who use their service are now subject to Pakistan’s oppressive anti-blasphemy laws. No response yet – hi @jack can you respond==> #SiliconValleySharia” Malkin said in a tweet.

In an email to Twitter, Michelle Malkin states she’s an “American citizen who rejects sharia law” and she “never agreed to any terms of service limiting tweets” on her “American law-abiding opinions of sharia and Islam” when she signed up for Twitter.

“I would like to know who or what government agency, private organization or individual complained about my tweet, when they did so, and what criteria you will use to decide whether to take any action on the reported content,” Michelle Malkin said in her email response to Twitter legal.

The Pakistani blasphemy laws Twitter is warning about is punishable by life imprisonment or death:

Section 295B criminalizes “defiling the Holy Quran,” and carries a penalty of life imprisonment. 295C mandates that those who “by words, either spoken or written, or by visible representation, or by any imputation innuendo, or insinuation, directly, defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life and shall also be liable for fine.”

So we are looking at the punishment of death, imprisonment and/or a fine — and all not necessarily in that order.

Feel safer yet, America?
