Algae bloom of Florida coast.
Florida reels after toxic algae outbreak ravages the coastline leaving marine life in peril | Daily Mail Online
The algal overgrowth occurs each year but intensifies because of heat, pollution and stagnant water
  • It first started in October, but has quickly become the longest outbreak to hit the southwest coast since 2006
  • Marine wildlife including sharks, dolphins, manatees, endangered sea turtles and a plethora of fish have washed ashore sick or dead
  • Back in July, 15 people were treated on Monday and Tuesday by the Martin Health System for symptoms related to algae toxins
  • Health issues for humans start kicking in at just 10,000 algae cells per liter - the same level needed to kill fish
  • The intense bloom has also racked in concentrations of 1 million cells per liter or more in various parts of the state - and especially Lee County

Apple claims their iPhones are not spying on people.
Apple tells lawmakers iPhones are not listening in on consumers
(Reuters) - Apple Inc told U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday that its iPhones do not listen to users without their consent and do not allow third-party apps to do so either, after lawmakers asked the company if its devices were invading users’ privacy.

Representatives Greg Walden, Marsha Blackburn, Gregg Harper and Robert Latta wrote to Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook and Alphabet Inc chief executive Larry Page in July, citing concerns about reports that smartphones could “collect ‘non-triggered’ audio data from users’ conversations near a smartphone in order to hear a ‘trigger’ phrase, such as ‘Okay Google’ or ‘Hey Siri.’”

In a letter to Walden, an Oregon Republican who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Apple said iPhones do not record audio while listening for Siri wakeup commands and Siri does not share spoken words. Apple said it requires users to explicitly approve microphone access and that apps must display a clear signal that they are listening.

The letters, in which lawmakers cited reports suggesting third-party applications had access to and used ‘non-triggered’ data without users’ knowledge, followed congressional hearings in April into Facebook Inc’s privacy practices, which included testimony by its CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Alphabet did not respond to questions about whether it had replied to lawmakers. Apple declined to comment beyond its letter, which was seen by Reuters.

A spokeswoman for the Republican majority on the House Energy and Commerce Committee said “both companies have been cooperative thus far. The Committee looks forward to reviewing and analyzing the responses as we consider next steps.”

Apple wrote that it had removed apps from its App Store over privacy violations but declined to say whether it had ever banned a developer. It also said it was up to developers to notify users when an app was removed for privacy reasons.

“Apple does not and cannot monitor what developers do with the customer data they have collected, or prevent the onward transfer of that data, nor do we have the ability to ensure a developer’s compliance with their own privacy policies or local law,” Apple wrote.

The iPhone maker’s App Store has generated $100 billion in revenue for developers over the past decade. Apple told lawmakers in its letter that it rejected about 36,000 apps from among the 100,000 submitted each week for violations of its guidelines.

Ancient Egyptian sphinx discovered during road construction between ancient temples
An Egyptian infrastructure project has been halted after construction workers found a sphinx-like statue during roadworks between the ancient temples of Karnak and Luxor.

Workers at the site were said to have found a “lion’s body with a human head” by the area’s Director General of Antiquities, Mohamed Abdel Aziz. News website Youm reported that the statue could not yet be lifted above ground “due to the nature of the environment it is in.” However, national heritage chief Khaled al Anani encouraged people to visit the area to see the discovery.

The temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor stand within the ancient city of Thebes and date back to around 1400 BCE. The first Luxor excavations began at the site in 1884, leading to a number of significant discoveries until around 1960 when excavation work ceased.

It is thought that the sphinx is a symbol of royalty in ancient Egypt. Many pharaohs had their heads carved into statues for their tombs to mark their relationship with the solar deity Sekhmet, a lioness. The most famous sphinx is found at Giza, adjacent to the Great Pyramids.

The latest discovery in the Luxor area took place in 2014, when archeologists unearthed the tomb of an Egyptian beer brewer, who lived 3200 years ago.

Impressive Roman ring found.
An ‘Absolutely Stunning’ Roman Gold Ring Is Unearthed In England
An amateur treasure hunter has made a ‘stunning’ find from the Roman era in the south-west of England. With the help of a metal detector, the man discovered a golden ring at a site being investigated by local archaeologists. The find is being hailed as very important and one of the most significant finds from the Roman-era in the area in recent years. This discovery has kindled a new excitement regarding the importance of the location where it was discovered and illustrates once again the significant role amateur archaeologists play in unearthing the past.

Romans in Britain
The Romans first invaded Britain in 55 BC but only really tried to conquer it in 43 AD during the reign of Emperor Claudius. They managed to subdue the local Celtic tribes by 80 AD and they transformed local society. Rome built cities and roads and Romanized large swathes of the population during their occupation. Britain from the mid-3 rd century onwards was frequently attacked by barbarian tribes, and in 410 AD the Roman Emperor withdrew the last of the Roman legions from the province that was, over time, occupied mainly by the Anglo-Saxons. The most well-known Roman settlements in the area near the find are Bath and Dorchester, although the ring has been found far from both of these centers.

Elon Musk in trouble with the SEC. He claimed in a tweet that he's thinking of making Tesla a private company and has funding lined-up. The SEC has a rule that all public statements made by CEO's must be true.
SEC has reportedly served Tesla with a subpoena after Elon Musk's take-private tweet
The Securities and Exchange Commisison has served Tesla with a subpoena after CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he was considering taking the company private and that he had the necessary funding lined up, according to reports from The New York Times and other outlets published Wednesday.

Earlier reports said the SEChad intensified scrutiny of the automaker after the controversial tweet. A subpoena would be one of the first steps in a formal inquiry.

Shares of Tesla were down 3 percent in afternoon trading, though they moved only a fraction of 1 percent following the Times article.

Representatives of Tesla and the SEC declined to comment to the Times.

Here's what seven experts are saying on Tesla potentially going private 12:36 PM ET Wed, 8 Aug 2018 | 02:37
Musk publicly floated the possibility of taking the company private in a tweet that sent shares seesawing and company leadership scrambling. His statement that he had the "funding secured" came under particular scrutiny, as it may have violated an SEC rule that essentially stipulates public statements made by company executives must be true.

Musk explained earlier this week that the Saudi Arabia sovereign wealth fund had expressed interest in taking Tesla private. The Saudi fund declined to comment to CNBC.

Fox Business Network's Charles Gasparino also reported the SEC subpoena on Wednesday, a few hours ahead of the Times and Journal reports, adding to Tesla's losses for the day.

San Francisco Launches Poop Patrol Squadron to Deal with Feces in Streets

San Francisco has a real problem. In fact, you could say that it stinks. That problem is that there's too much feces on the sidewalks in San Francisco.

The city has fielded about 15,000 calls regarding turds on the streets since January 1 — an average of 65 calls every day! And it's not just irresponsible dog owners, though they certainly are part of the issue. No, San Francisco has to worry about human fecal matter, thanks to a homeless population that runs rampant with not enough places to go to the bathroom.

You can "scrap" paying to have more toilets put in, they'll be used for prostitution or dealing/shooting up drugs.

The shadow

The shadow knows!
this angers me! My oldest came out as a lesbian. We love her. My wife talks about sexual freedom to love who you choose to love. Today this story rocked me to my core it sent me in a state of anger. how dare this man blame others for the conduct of his priest? How dare he say that happy loving couples like my daughter and her girlfriend are to blame for a priest no being able to keep his hands to himself? How dare he in his high and mighty position judge?
I am beyond angry but any letter to the church will be ignored. This is why I hate organized religion.

Reality Winner gets five years.
Reality Winner, who pleaded guilty to leaking secret U.S. report, gets 63-month sentence
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A former government contractor who pleaded guilty to mailing a classified U.S. report to a news organization was sentenced to more than five years Thursday as part of a deal with prosecutors, who called it the longest sentence ever imposed for a federal crime involving leaks to the media.

Reality Winner, 26, pleaded guilty in June to a single count of transmitting national security information. The former Air Force translator worked as a contractor at a National Security Agency's office in Augusta, Georgia, when she printed a classified report and left the building with it tucked into her pantyhose. Winner told the FBI she mailed the document to an online news outlet.

In court Thursday, Winner apologized and acknowledged that what she did was wrong.
