Old Lafayette: UFO sightings over Tippecanoe County's southern skies
UFO sightings date back to a warm May night in 1897, as far as Tippecanoe County history is concerned.
Then after a 50-year absence, a local sighting occurred in the summer of 1947, during a season when "flying saucers" suddenly were reported from all corners of the globe.
Another episode came to light in mid-November 1951, and another in mid-July 1952. With one exception, all these local sightings took place in the south half of Tippecanoe County.
In 1897, a man on a bicycle told of a cigar-shaped object landing near Stockwell. The 1951 episode occurred in the Elston area, with two Air Force jets following an object east.
