I have no clue what civil engineers ^^ are

@8:15,,Not soo,, the overhung cables to the diagonal trusses were cosmetic,,, huh ???
Thats,, something else..

Why making a bridge with fake elements ?

I'm a simple engineer..

And civil engineers would have to deal with it

I'm a mechanical engineer...

Those civil engineers ought to be held accountable along with the place setters and accompanying supervisors and workers, everyone who had a part in this bridge...

Mmmm. The workers,, are they really guilty if they only took direct orders from their supervisors.. I'm not sure...
But I feel the design/construction civil engineers are clear suspects in this... :wacko8:

Btw, Im suppose to be a mech. Engineer too :smile2: a sort of,, I'm told.

Perhaps if the workers saw something amiss and did not report it, they could be prosecuted as well if charges are filed against anyone...

My job uses very little of my engineering skills and the businesses I own do not need those skills either...The renewable energy project I've been working on for my workshop is where I've been applying engineering skills lately...

The two groups involved in a structural failure such as the WTC are the ASCE and the ASME. NIST also tends to get involved.

The ASME sets material standards and the ASCE is the Civil Engineering Society.

ASME members in general build weapons while the ASCE members build targets but they both can do structural analysis mainly using CAD tools to apply methods such as "Finite Element Analysis".

Since a bridge is a "target" it is more of an ASCE issue.

I'm lookin into it :D ASCE forbid

The basics is that a solid is approximated by a mesh of line segments that represent the properties of the material.

High stress, high flex areas have a finer mesh to improve the accuracy.

This allows numerical analysis of the response of the solid to stress and loading, using an affordable amount of computer resources.

Most CAD tools will generate a first cut mesh.

I've know people that used Autodesk, and Abaqus, but ANSYS and NASTRAN used to be the big structural programs.

Thats neat... Wonder if they could do the same on a complete bridge structure... probably ?

I remember doing a simple version ^^ for a beam on piece of paper... That took some time, and drawing of interconnected diagrams..

bably ?

They can do a whole skyscraper.

Mostly at that stage they are trying to shift all the resonances out of the possible range of realization.

A skyscraper that was resonant at subhertz frequencies would be bad. The tacoma narrows bridge or that british walkway are an example.

Tacoma narrows was resonant at 0.2 hertz.
