I watched the first episode last night. I was entertained overall but I had to suppress my inner critic a bit. The show did leave me wanting to watch more, but also left me wanting to know if some major elements to the story were even possibly real. I don't want to 'spoil' anything but at least two incidents there, just seemed like "OK, there's no way that is what happened." to me. But now I wonder.

My wife, who is not into this stuff really, watched it with me and didn't care for it much but didn't hate it.

Sometimes with stuff like this where such liberties - I believe - are taken with true stories, I wonder why they don't just fictionalize it 100% and not use real people as characters. But, I guess it's a little trickery to keep you wondering how accurate it could be. I don't know. I have Mark O'Connell's book The Close Encounters Man and have started into it but it hasn't taken off for me; I'm hoping it will give me some guidance on what in the show is total fiction.

That's what the CW will be doing with the Roswell, New Mexico series that starts next week.

The History Channel threw us a interesting few bones About Project Blue Book | HISTORY

As a plane geek Gorman was in an F-51 (name changed from a P-51 in WW2) - same as Mantell. Pretty sure the one used in the episode is a North American T-6 trainer. My brother and I were out in the middle of nowhere in Wisconsin on our way to the OshKosh airshow and just as we were beginning to think we missed a turn we saw a flight of those things go over at low level - they were mocked up to look like Japanese torpedo planes.

On IMDB it has an 8.2 rating, which is pretty high. A large number of the reviews there are favorable as well. The biggest complaint is that there are too many commercials.

The Project Blue Book Facebook page also has mostly favorable comments. But I admit that's probably a biased audience.

Anyway, I liked it. I don't expect it to be factual.

To tell you the truth, the whole UFO subject for me is mostly entertainment. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I had been abducted or intimidated by Men in Black. But as I haven't, I don't take it too seriously.
On what planet?...The response is mostly favourable here on planet earth...

i am talking about reviews made by actual ufologists, professional reviewers will check the story as fiction, not on what its based on

My biggest problem with the show is that its pulling in too many directions . Its like the shows creators arent sure where to take it. As a retelling of historical events its too far removed from the events as they actually happened and as a (scifi)drama its too boring. Ill give it another chanse though
i think they should take the first direction, its tasteless to use real people in science fiction or fantasy

99% of it is fiction, the gorman dogfight wasn't even investigated by hynek to start with, he only started having an influence in project blue book in the late 50's

Ah okay, I haven't seen too many of those type reviews yet, I've just looked at in general...

You're probably right. Many ufologists might not like the show. But in all likelihood, the show was not created with them as the main audience. Bear in mind that one of the History Channel's biggest shows is Ancient Aliens. That's the audience the show is targeting.

Watched Midway from 1976 last night. They don't make movies like that for nitwits like me who can tell you in excruciating detail what color Yamamoto's socks were, they make them for a general audience who has only a vague notion of what the real events were.@wwkirk is absolutely right. This series isn't made for ufologists, but so far it seems to be entertaining enough. It's a sort of repackaged X-Files.

@goblin - I read The Close Encounters Man. It was alright. Hynek was many things but an action adventure hero he was not.

you wouldn't have had J Allen Hynek up and then down in one - that was a bit silly.
Great point. I meant to include that with my statement regarding the show. Once I heard that Hynek was going to go up in the plane I was like "Yeah right!" and then on top of that fly through turbulance/storm? Then on top of that be involved with hot-dog flying? Where it ended up destroying a super expensive piece of government equipment and almost killed two people? Like anything close to that would ever happen. Pilot would probably be busted down to peeling potatoes for the next 5 years in the galley as punishment while also getting his paycheck docked to pay for the wasted plane and someone in Washington would want to know what the hell he was doing with a civilian up in the plane doing that type of flying. But whatever. I get it, it's decent show (so far) with cheesy computer graphics.

On my ship we never wore hats indoors although down in the engineering sections we wore our working ball caps that had the ship logo and designation, even the Chief Engineer wore his ball cap lol...

...
I should have pointed out that what I mentioned earlier was applicable when wearing our dress blues, dress whites or working blues, working whites. When people were in their working coveralls or flight suits, the enlisted guys did have ball caps with our squadron VP-10 on it that they may have on inside the hangar. But still no saluting indoors.

How many times have you watched the original Project UFO/Project Blue Book TV show? You can find all the episodes on YouTube as I've posted a couple of them on here before. My favorite being their version of the Cisco Grove UFO/Robot incident.

well, no
but i know with certainty that the new one isn't going to tackle the weirder ones
Well I'm not sure how much more weirder it gets then the Flatwoods Monster - but that's what aired last night. So two episodes in and I think PBB is pretty cheesy. I'm already over the mysterious man that is showing up and leaving stupid clues behind. I'm also not sure whats going on with the lesbian overtones between the two women - but if I wanted to see stuff like that I'd go to Pornhub. And you definitely know it's 2019 because almost EVERYTHING rams gayness and/or minorities down your throat. I didn't care to see two men making out with each other hard during an episode of Project Blue book. If 3.8% of the US population is gay (according to Gallup) - then 3.8% of tv shows/commercials should have gay characters in them. So sick of going to watch a movie on Netflix or Amazon & then force me to watch this preview that involves to guys sucking face with each other. I don't care if someone is gay. I mean, I chose to live in the gay district of Seattle not only once, but twice because I think it's a great place to live (Capitol Hill district). But I'm sick of seeing this stuff jammed in my face. I'm glad I didn't watch this episode with my 10 year old daughter. My kid was watching one of those cheesy Disney TV shows that are on and I was staring at the screen dumbfounded because one of the main adult characters had a double whammy; was a gay Asian. And when I mean gay, I mean that super flamboyant, over the top irritating type of gay. It's just not necessary. It's like the left wing which controls 95 percent of media is making up for the past by making sure we are overloaded with this type of stuff. Was disappointed to see that a show about UFO's had to make sure that that element was included.
