Haven't seen this in many years and now that I have I forgot how bad it is. At the time we were all blown away by the historical detail, now it just looks hokey.
There's a lot of speechifying, explanation of Great Causes that I doubt those at the time were too worried about. It's perfectly normal in a movie from the 40s-60s but a bit out of place in 1993.
The fake beards and uniforms are a bit tough to take. Tom Berenger makes a good Longstreet but is obviously struggling with that enormous hat and fake beard. If you beamed Martin Sheen back and stood him next to the real Lee I doubt anyone would note a particularly strong resemblance.
The extras. Those guys had a lot of fun from the looks of it. You never see more than a few at a time and the play-fighting is a bit obvious. At that time in the war the Army of Northern Virginia had no fat guys in it for sure, they were a very lean ragged dangerous lot. Foot Calvary some of them were called - lots of 19th century aerobics.
I'd love to see a modern remake with CGI unfortunately they'd screw it up. Joshua Chamberlain would probably utter some witty tag line and hold his revolver sideways instead of yelling 'charge' and the 20th Maine would proceed down the Little Round Top with bayonets and martial arts maneuvers and flying kicks that would satisfy any John Wick fan ........
