As Above So Below
'Full Saturn' to headline alignment of planets through Monday night

Comet NEOWISE has stolen the spotlight this month, but on Monday night, skywatchers may want to turn their attention to one of the most recognizable planets in the solar system. This summer has been great for stargazers as there has been plenty to see in the sky, and the coming nights will be the best of the year to spot Saturn as it reaches opposition

“The planet Saturn will appear opposite the Sun as seen from the Earth (called "opposition”),” NASA said. “Saturn will be at its closest and brightest for this apparition, effectively a 'full Saturn,' rising around sunset and setting around sunrise.”

Saturn will officially reach opposition on Monday, July 20.

Although Saturn will be at peak brightness, it may blend in with nearby stars.

One easy way to find it is to look for Jupiter, which will be incredibly bright and not too far away from Saturn. They will both rise in the evening in the southeastern sky, with Saturn appearing just to the left of Jupiter. The duo will glow side-by-side throughout the night, setting in the southwest around sunrise.

No telescope is needed to see Jupiter or Saturn, but the two are great objects to focus on for people learning how to use a new telescope. Saturn, in particular, is an interesting object for those with a telescope as focusing in on the planet will reveal its famous rings. Some may even see Titan, Saturn’s largest moon.

Pointing a telescope or a pair of binoculars at Jupiter will reveal its four largest moons and perhaps even the Great Red Spot, a storm that has been raging on the planet for hundreds of years.

Night owls and early risers are in for a special treat on the nights surrounding the Saturn Opposition. About 45 to 60 minutes before sunrise, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury will be lined up across the southern sky. The thin crescent moon will also be visible next to Mercury on the mornings of Saturday, July 18, and Sunday, July 19.

While Saturn rises in the southeast after sunset, Comet NEOWISE may be visible setting in the northwest below the Big Dipper. The comet will be visible only through about July 23, so people outside looking for Saturn should also turn around and try to spot NEOWISE before it fades away as it heads back into the depths of the outer solar system.

Saturn will continue to shine next to Jupiter through the rest of the summer, but it will gradually become dimmer heading into the autumn as it moves farther and farther away from the Earth.

Barsoom. Stunning. And importantly, at no point did anyone see ancient Martian crankshafts, fuel tanks, pyramids or faces. I guess the evil scientists purged all that first.

I remember seeing this from the first Viking lander and about losing my mind to be actually looking at Mars.
My how things have changed

Hi Auggie, been following this latest NASA mission from the announcement, and just a passing thought? ... could this thing turn out to be a bad idea? ... I mean, with all of the terrible shit that is going off around the world today ie covid and the other emerging 'super-viruses' over the recent past... aren't we gambling that we're not going to fetch back something that we ought to have left alone out there? ... well as a believer that 'panspermia' is a pretty viable prospect, ... it worries me that we might just unleash something that might turn out to be our downfall. ... It kind of reminds me of our conscious attempts to invite 'unknown visitors' to our safe haven for the past half century ... the road map and info that Sagan et al put on the Voyager Explorers and the constant radio come-ons that being beamed out inviting these same 'unknowns' 24/7 ... call me a timid rabbit, ... but it's the 'Unknown's-Intentions' that worries me about that undemocratically -decided-action.

... remember "Calvin" ?

Cheers Auggie.

200 million miles, snatches two ounces of rock off an asteroid and brings them home. Speaking as a man who went to school with a representation of the Solar System in paper mache balls hanging from the ceiling (including Pluto) that's freaking cool !!

Yes we ae wandering around out in a neighborhood that isn't familiar to us. There is no guarantees that its safe to be just picking up stuff and bringing it back here . Maybe if they quarantine it until its proven to be safe they did that with the Mon rocks didn't they. The idea that that our Solar System / Galaxy is safe and sterile is a bit silly I think. Who knows what crawlies are just waiting to infect our bodies when released into our atmosphere or end up on the skin of some researcher. That's been going on for billions of years with space dust , meteors an asteroids hitting the Earth. For all we know that's where a lot of our exotic virus's came from , out there not here , who knows. No one monitors that do they ? Maybe its better te g have a look but leave the samples behind the Martian rovers are a better idea . They look but leave it here it is. The Andromeda Strain movie is a question in point.

Forgot about that movie. This is why the boys had to be put in a fish bowl a while when they came back from the Moon missions, at about the time that movie was made. That isolation trailer is still around - at Udvar Hazy I think.

X-ray observations of a super-Chandrasekhar object reveal a ONe and a CO white dwarf merger product embedded in a putative SN Iax remnant

And this could only be seen With Modern Equipment, Invisible Stars Guys, They don't emit light we can see with our eyes. It makes you wonder just how big the universe really is.
And Just To ice that Cake over Here is a Video about it, From Anton Petrov, Anton is not as well known as he should be on youtube, That's because He is alienatingly intelligent. Those people never tend to do well on platforms that function primarily on popularity.

That's So Neat!!! I didn't know about this :D

"Evil" or as he refers to himself, "Mr. Shadow", is a moon-sized star-like entity, bent on the destruction of all life everywhere.

He possesses many abilities, which include the following:

  • Indestructibility (conventionally) - When Mr. Shadow is attacked by three large Earth warships that unleash multiple salvos of evidently nuclear capacity, his surface liquefied in anticipation of the attack and he absorbed the shots, which made him increase in size many times over until the ships no longer had the capacity to destroy him.
  • Telepathy - Mr. Shadow can affect a person's mind, either through someone looking at him (albeit through a viewing port on a ship) or talking to him on a phone. He can make them feel very uneasy, to the point where a blood vessel on the top of the person's head will burst.
  • Communication - Despite being a small world-like entity he can conventionally communicate; doing so by "consuming" satellites. Doing this enables Mr. Shadow to call Zorg (his human puppet on Earth) in his office.
He is also highly intelligent, having been described as "The most terrible intelligence imaginable". He is aware of the weapon that can stop him and actively (through the use of others) seeks it out. One example of this is his manipulation of Zorg (a billionaire tycoon) who in turn hires Mangalores to hunt down the components of the weapon. The weapon can be used by him to turn light to dark, life to death, forever.

I didn't know this conspiracy :D But it's awesome and I love it :D

... every bit of that could be in the political thread .... :)
