Spotify to remove Neil Young's songs after Joe Rogan ultimatum

Spotify Technology is removing Neil Young’s music, as the folk-rock star isn’t wavering in his objections to Joe Rogan’s podcast.

The "Heart of Gold" and "Harvest Moon" singer earlier this week penned an open letter to his manager and label asking them to remove his music from the service, saying it is spreading fake information about COVID-19 vaccines through Mr. Rogan’s show. "They can have Rogan or Young. Not both," he wrote.

"We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users. With that comes great responsibility in balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators," a Spotify spokesman said. The company has detailed content policies in place and has removed over 20,000 Covid-related podcast episodes since the start of the pandemic, he added.

"We regret Neil’s decision to remove his music from Spotify, but hope to welcome him back soon," he said.

Spotify struck a deal with Mr. Rogan in 2020 worth more than $100 million, according to people familiar with the matter, bringing his popular and lucrative show exclusively to its service.

While the letter has since been removed from Mr. Young’s website, he has been in discussions with his label, Warner Music Group Corp.’s Warner Records, and Spotify since then, and continued to hold his ground, according to people familiar with the matter. The formal request to remove the music was made Wednesday and could take several hours to take effect across Spotify’s service across the world.

Before the removal, Mr. Young had 2.4 million followers and over six million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Suppose a person or group is literally spreading misinformation, even lies. Not just weird or contrarian opinions, but claims that can be proven to be false. Is the best response to try and silence or suppress them? Personally, I think not.

Given human psychology and many historical examples, things that are censored, forbidden, deemed taboo or off limits, become highly attractive for that very reason. Many people seek out the forbidden because they think the reason it's forbidden is because it is special, even possibly a higher truth.

And there is something to that suspicion. For example, suppose a person, organization, or even another government was saying something which the supposed "good guys" go to extreme measures to try and keep you from hearing. A logical way to think would be that IF the suppressed or forbidden claims really are untrue, especially if they can be proven to be untrue, the powers that be would put the lies on display along with their refutation, so that everyone will know it is just BS. But if instead, they scramble to stop anyone from hearing about it, there must be something to it! After all, there's no need to hide something that can be shown to be false.

That's why I think it's wrong and crazy to try and suppress possible lies and misinformation. Better to bring it way out in the open and demonstrate over and over again why it's dead wrong. That's how you actually liberate people.

One last point. In the above I was presuming that the "dangerous views" were provably false. But what if they weren't, and were instead debatable, unsettled possibilities? In that case, the attempt to suppress such discussion doesn't derive from some misguided attempt to do good. Instead, the effort to suppress stems from a desire to wield power and control others.

$100 million vs $25 million. Should be interesting. I give them credit for not knuckling under but think its more money than principle.

went to Spotify. I was getting a little tired of them anyway and that's where they lost me. Spotify can go away and I wouldn't miss it; a form of voting with my feet. Similar to Howard Stern going behind a pay wall. He was afternoon NYC drive time for years, AM and FM. He went behind a pay wall and goodbye. Didn't care enough about it.

That's what we used to do. Just ignore it and move on. Now our Karenculture has to have everything sanitized for consumption. What about the children? The children? They're already completely f****d anyway so don't worry too much. Personally, even if this is resolved somehow how about I add Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and anybody else that joined in the fray and ignore them too.

I really don’t give a crap about what Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and others do about Spotify. They all have made tens or hundreds of millions of dollars over the course of their careers. Joe Rogan maybe a superstar but he is still a knucklehead. The idea that he was giving Aaron Rodgers medical advice is ludicrous.

I did notice that Spotify finally put out a statement. It was pretty lame. What hasn’t been mentioned much is that Spotify stock took a 6% dip over this little dust up. That amounted to a loss of 2 billion dollars. They can’t afford too much more bad publicity at that rate.

White House urges Spotify to take further action on Joe Rogan: ‘More can be done’

White House press secretary Jen Psaki called on music and podcast streaming giant Spotify to do “more” in the fight against Covid-19 misinformation on Tuesday.

At her daily press briefing, President Joe Biden’s top spokeswoman was asked about a decision by the company to add disclaimers linking to Covid-19 information hubs to any piece of content that includes discussion of the pandemic, vaccines, or Covid-19 itself. She responded that the change was a good step, but that the company could take steps (if it wanted) to actively prohibit content that contained misinformation that experts have warned is prolonging the pandemic and leading to more deaths.

Ms Psaki said that it was the responsibility of all companies and particularly that of those platforms where Americans get their news to “be responsible and be vigilant to ensure the American people have accurate information about something as significant as Covid-19. That certainly includes Spotify.”

“Ultimately our view is that it’s a good step, it’s a positive step, but there’s more that can be done,” said the press secretary.

Thanks to this foolish meddling by government officials, Rogan should have a legal censorship case if Spotify drops or represses him.

I have never listened to this show. But this situation can serve as reminder regarding the internet in general. If you find something you really like, download it. You can always discard it later. But it is a big mistake to assume that something that has been available will always remain available. Sometimes its pulled by a provider, or because of a lawsuit, or even the creator may not want it out there anymore. Or possibly, it is still out there, but the price goes way up. This applies even to Torrent users: not all content remains widely or efficiently downloadable indefinitely. I believe you already adhere to this policy @nivek.

Yep, for many years now I've always downloaded things I like and I tell other friends the same thing, if you like something that's online, download it, regardless if it's movies, music, or even reading materials...No telling how long it will be available online, especially these days, content that isn't in tune with the current radical and volatile social climate are being removed updated, or changed regularly...

Neil Young won't leave it alone, pathetic fool...

Neil Young takes aim at Spotify's CEO and tells employees there to leave their jobs

Neil Young has slammed Spotify's CEO and urged the tech company's employees to quit their jobs in protest against Covid-19 misinformation.

The singer-songwriter, 76, took aim at the streaming platform's boss Daniel Ek in the bitter feud over podcaster Joe Rogan, who has courted controversy with his views on Covid vaccines and his use of racial slurs.

Young's music was removed from Spotify on January 26 after he refused to share the platform with Joe Rogan, who he claims spreads misinformation about Covid-19 on his top-rated Spotify podcast The Joe Rogan Experience.

The move prompted Joni Mitchell and other artists to follow suit and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to 'express concerns' about its content.

Now in a new salvo, Young has continued his war of words in a statement on his website, saying: 'In our communication age, misinformation is the problem. Ditch the misinformers.

'I say Daniel Ek is your big problem - not Joe Rogan. Get out of that place before it eats up your soul.'

Spotify will be monitoring Rogan from here on in. I am sure he didn’t sign up for that. Four years and $100 million doesn’t sound too bad.
