Binge-watched the first series of this last week, and found that it was O.K! ... I mean just O.K, not great or anything like that, but it also wasn't rubbish. It's true that it was trying to invoke the vibe of the original Star Trek from the sixties, it didn't quite reach those heady heights [nowhere near really] ... but a much better earlier version of the Star trek Universe than Star Trek Enterprise.
... But the main failing in this series for a man of my age was that the top three or four characters with any balls at all were of course female! All of the men were relegated to the 1960's version of women, and the worst of it all is that Captain Pike [though he looked the part of the dashing handsome hero that could knock out a Klingon with a single punch as well as navigating his ship through hazardous situations with all the guile of Kirk himself, is no more than a chair-poser that leaves the fighting to the girls, and the brainwork to.... anyone else?
Spock does not measure up either! ... unlike the immortal Leonard Nimoy's venerable Vulcan, this offering of Ethan Peck's version of the younger Spock never seems to be the smartest man in the room and is far too quick to try and be humorous ... plus the fact that he seems to be a hell of a lot more amorous than the original ! [i'm sure that Mr. Nimoy would not approve!] ... but nevertheless, it past the time on just well enough for me to finish the series. 6'10
Cheers.
