I have never seen a tarantula like the one in your photo. We have a smaller black variety in New Mexico. In the 80's when I used to drive from Albuquerque & Roswell and back for work, I remember in July the tarantulas would cross the highway in huge herds just at dusk. I pulled over because I did not want to run over them. It was an interesting thing to see, a wave of black going across the highway.

When I was a kid my dad had a pet tarantula that he kept in a candy jar. We used to catch bugs for it and watch it eat them. My mother made him get rid of it after a couple of weeks. It was fun to let it crawl up our arm.
