They did it to themselves, cover most of the ground in concrete, no rain can get into the ground to fill the aquifers that they have relentlessly been pumping water out of...They are deflating the ground they live on, poor planning and engineering and no long term solution to solve the problem...
Most Indonesians I have met are gentle and humble. I doubt if they even understood the implications of what they were doing. The government is corrupt, the people are poor. It is very sad. I hope something can be done.

When they settled the city there.....(which was a long time ago if I remember correctly).....they didn't realize it was a poor place or that sea levels would continue to rise. I do agree that modern mismanagement due to corruption likely does have a lot to do with as well.
