With no technological artefacts coming to light, the ancient alien theories seem destined to stay just that and recent genome results seem to rule out hybridization:

So, leaving aside the possibility of a well documented event or government disclosure (or the elephant in the room, the TTSA) I see a technological breakthrough as now the most likely move forward.

The recent developments in quantum radar may for the first time give us proper eyes. If it results in tracking, such technology may make plausible denial difficult.

Unfortunately, as our technology increases, it may deter visitors or at least change visitation methods. But all said, we have a very interesting planet with an abundance of life and so perhaps we should get used to probes and visits.
