The last two storms in my area came from directly up North, which usually more winter storms come from the North, not as much in the summer but it does happen sometimes...Oddly enough a storm is fast approaching my area right now as I type this post and it's coming from up North again lol...Thunderstorms never come from the East unless they are tied to a hurricane or tropical storm, those are the only storms that come from the East, the big ones lol...Storms from the South and from the West are common...

had an interview for a part time retail job where, after the HR person interviewed me, the store manager ( who was in his 20s) came in and talked to me

Me too. My first 'interview' was with a woman I know at the store which took ten seconds. The second was with the store manager, an hour long sit down in a closed office. For minimum wage no less. This woman trotted out such a load of steaming horseshit I was truly impressed - a North Korean interrogator would have been shamed by her zeal for the Company Propaganda. For a solid hour she told me all about her retail journey and how I could have one too. the world is an orange oyster. Ho hum.

She later vanished after having seriously defrauded the company, faked cancer, resurfaced in another state under a different name minus her husband and three kids. I'm still there .....same name .... don't think the FBI want to talk to me either ....

Over the weekend my phone bluescreened twice, never saw a phone do that before...I was using it and the screen went dark a second then the screen was totally blue, a navy blue colour, after 10 seconds or so it shut off but started back up after that...I think I need a new phone, wait, this is a new phone, ugh...

I have some very exotic hardwoods stored in my workshop, not large quantities but a few boards of this and that from Africa and South America, some very hard to find...Purple heart, Jatoba, Wenge, Leopard wood are a few names off the top of my head...If anyone has a project and needs some let me know, its been storing for about 8 years, bug free, most pre-planed at 4/4 up to 8/4 thick...

What is minimum wage in the USA? Here it's $15 an hour although some provinces, like British Columbia is a little higher. $15.20.

I bought a plank of wood yesterday at Home Depot for my air conditioner to fit in the balcony window. It is 7 1/2 inches wide and 1 inch thick. I think it's a total of 4 or 5 feet long and it cost me $28 dollars and that was with a 30% discount.

A job recruiter did that to me last week, we talked on the phone a couple of times early in the week, then out of the blue he just texts me and says, "Can you drive to Winston-Salem tomorrow?" and nothing else...I waited about an hour then replied "Who is this?"...He calls me 30 minutes later to tell me its him but how am I supposed to know with an unannounced text like that and not identifying who he is...I told him he's not the only one I'm talking to about work, I get many calls, emails, and texts lately and daily...

It is a professional thing to do to say your name in a first text to someone out of the blue like that on business matters...I didn't ask him to text me, honestly when talking about work I would rather speak on the phone than text about it...

...
I think their assumption is that they are so important to us that we put them in our contact list. I don't put repair people or prospective someone for anything in my contact list. Maybe I am calling from an old rotary phone ( :laugh8: ), then the text would never even get there. At least your guy did identify himself. I never any response from the contractor. I told my friend about it and she recommended some one she knows personally who can install my door, but I will have to go to a big box remodel store to get a contractor for the other stuff.

It depends on the state and the city. In Santa Fe it is 10.00 an hour but in the rest of the state it is federal minimum wage, which I think is still under 8.00 an hour. Some states have raised it and some haven't.

Not sure. Started at $12. Now $14.50. Just gas money
The federal minimum wage is still 7.25. 2.13 for tipped employees.

Minimum Wage | U.S. Department of Labor

I was mistaken about the state of New Mexico. Apparently this year 1-1-21 it is now 10.50 an hour, or 2.55 an hour for tipped staff. I think they need to get rid of tips. It is just a way for employers to skip paying their wait staff.
Another caveat - 9.50 is minimum wage for employees who get benefits.

Next year the amounts will go up to 11.50 per hour and 2.80 for tipped employees

Yeah a nice storm turned into a damaging one, it had high winds and heavy rain laying down much of my garden, you can see my corn, I've been standing them back up, about half way done now...

There's a technique I use for uprighting corn thats been laid down from a storm, but it must be done as soon as possible before the ground dries out...Firmly grasp the stalk of the plant around 7 or 8 inches or so from the beginning of the roots and as you start raising the plant make sure you're still holding the plant firmly and slightly push downward as its being raised...The soil is soft and wet, by slightly pressing the plant downward whilst raising it will help anchor the plant better in the following days as it re-establishes its root system...Then once the plant is upright, using my hand tool, a spade shovel I gather some dirt from between the rows and mound it all around and gently pack it down around the corn stalk...It will then stay up on its own and in the coming days it will get its roots anchored in well and may not lay down the next time...I usually mound up the corn well with dirt anyway but this season acted like it was going to be a drier season earlier in the year so I didn't elevate the rows higher as I would for a wetter season and the past 10 days have been wet ones lol...

I was wondering what they offered at stores like those...

No idea what minimum wage is here but it's so close I pay little attention. Like me, to most it's supplementary income to their spouse's but there are a few that earn their living at it. A job's a job and no problem with anybody that wants to dive in all the way and do it. It's just that what you have to endure to receive any measurable reward for the effort absolutely makes me want to vomit over and over. And over. Big box retail is unpleasant, to say the least.

I think you and I are on the same page about this, PF, because our ages and backgrounds are so similar. It used to be you could get a job in retail to make some extra money or use some free time and it was no big deal. You could get a job in the back unloading trucks and moving things in the warehouse. You could get a job on the floor stocking shelves and assisting customers. You could get a job at the front end on the registers. Now most retailers are uber corporatized and they want you to be trained on everything. The North Korean style corporate dogma is only growing worse.

I've been working outside since first light this morning, tilled the garden and deweeded it, then cleaned up everything around the building that earlier this week I raised and added floor reinforcement, mowed all the grass, pruned the pecan tree of the lower limbs, I could barely go under some places on my riding mower because they were hanging too low...Got done before 1pm and went into town to get dog food...Its 84 degrees today and full sun, I'll have a good tan if I keep this up lol, tonight the low is forecast at 62 degrees, tomorrow a high of 90 and sunshine, then back to mid to low 80s and 3 days of rain starting on Sunday...

Wow, you did really well! Gotta say tho, if you keep up this pace in this kind of weather, you will receive much more than just a tan, so please be careful. ;)

Do you get lots of pecans each year?

The pecan tree used to be full of them every year, however the past 2 years nothing, not one pecan...I guess the tree is taking a break lol, it's looking good and healthy otherwise...The apple tree did that once, it took a break for one year and didn't produce any apples..

Huh, I did not know they did that. I know certain trees like the pear tree will not produce pears if it is a lone tree. I don't know why, but I do know that to be true. lol My friend has some raspberry bushes that don't produce fruit anymore. She thinks the birds are eating them, but I don't think so. I think they just stopped producing. Not sure why or if it's just temporary.
