I have 9 fans going around the house, 2 cieling fans, 2 exhaust fans and the fan on the swamp cooler, It was close to 100 F the last 3 days after having wet cool days (70-75 F temp), The humidity is still high so it will be miserable this afternoon. Yesterday I did turn the pump on the swamp cooler and it helps keep the temperature down but the humidity was bad inside and outside so I think when the big fan starts blowing hot air I will just turn it off. I keep all the windows covered during the day. I have really nice shades on the back porch, which is on the south side. If the humidity would get below 16% I wouldn't even notice the heat.

I would not have so many fans going but I am pet sitting and the spare cats are locked in a bedroom that I don't use, the spare dogs are in the laundry room.

I hope everyone in places that are usually not hot but are now are staying safe and hydrated.

Coffee might be fine but I never cared for 'black rifles' at all. They go pwaaaaaang when you shoot them. Annoying. An AK isn't a black rifle anyway, it's an AK.

Is it easy to can beans? My friend has too many and she gives them to me but I can't eat then all either.

But now that I am thinking about this, I have another friend that cans a lot. And she is on a subsitance level financials situation. I will pass them on to her. She is eating mostly fermented foods that she ferments herself. Thanks for bringing this up.

Canned foods in mason jars last many many years if, stored properly, kept in the cupboard or storage containers that don't get light for instance...Canning is easy but it can be time consuming in preparation depending on what youre canning and you need a pressure pot made for canning, it will be the correct size for holding the mason jars, quart size and smaller...I've canned homemade salsa and pasta sauce, blueberries, corn, etc., there's so many foods you can can and store away, even meats...I'm eating beans this week that I canned 5 years ago lol...

I also have a vacuum sealer, food saver using the clear vacuum bags for the freezer and mylar bags for longer term storage...When using mylar bags for dry goods it's best to use oxygen absorbers and put in in before sealing...This will guarantee the foods will be fresh when you eventually open them...Mylar bags can be used on vacuum sealer just fine, the vacuum gets most of the oxygen out but not all of it so the oxygen absorbers take care of the rest...

We've had our power out since midnight last night and they estimate repairs to finish sometime around 3 pm this afternoon...A big tree fell across the road about a mile away and landed on electrical equipment...I took a drive out this morning and saw them working on the mess...

The grid power is back on, 12 hrs later, they still have one of the roads blocked off so I can't see directly how much damage was done...We had a severe storm come through around midnight last night after the tropical storm had already passed which did some damage and taking out the electrical power in this area...

Were you able to save all your stored refrigerator and freezer items?

I'm pretty scared right now. I have 2 dual hose portable ac units and they work amazingly well. What I am afraid of is if we get those rolling black outs because the grid can't handle the volume of electrical power being put out by all of us.

I lost a neighbor to the heat last week when we had that severe heat dome over the Prairies.

He was a very simple man about my age. He had some type of disability that prevented him from maturing past the age of a 16 year old, maybe even younger. He had an advocate that allocated all his money and checked in on him twice a year. Other than that I have never seen him with a friend or family member. He was completely alone. He seemed to prefer it that way. Although he was friendly with me and once he got started talking to me he wouldn't stop.

His favorite pass time was collecting bottles and cans all around the area. He kept track of every one he found and would tell me how many he found that day, week, month, and his total for the year, including the dollar amount he got for recycling them. They didn't find him until the stink was unbearable in the hallways. :(

No one here seems to know what happened, but I am sure it was most likely heat stroke that took him. He was obsessive about going out collecting everyday.

The weather is still extreme here. Today it was 33C or 91.4F. I would like to purchase some of those mini ac units because if the power goes off I am certainly a goner guys. My heart only works at 50% since I had all those attacks in 2014. The problem is I can't seem to find out if those mini units can remain on their chargers without issue. Because if I can't leave them sitting on the charger fully charged and ready to use, what use are they? How will I charge them once the power goes down?

I originally wanted to purchase a couple of them so that I could use them in the car because I was never able to get the ac fixed in there. Each mini ac unit works up to 10 hours at a time before it needs to be recharged which means I could use one in the front seat and one facing the back to keep the car interior cool whilst I run errands. I can just put them in the trunk when I am not in the car and bring them back to my apartment to recharge each time. But what about if we have rolling black outs?

Literally just reading abut this.

1812. Isaac Hull as commander of USS Constitution vs HMS Gurriere is where the nickname came from. British 18 pound cannonballs supposedly bounced off. I think it still has a few lodged in it's sides. That thing is made of live oak dragged from swamps in South Carolina, apparently the most dense species of oak in existence. Also had unique proportions and diagonal bracing it making it very fast and capable of carrying respectable armament. Sort of next-gen tech at the time. One of six of it's type (three really) and one of the most successful in design and performance. Conventional British frigates of the type that had been so successful for so many years found these ships to be unpleasant surprises, especially when expertly handled the way Hull did. The Brits called them 'super-frigates' and forbade their captains from engaging in single ship combat against them. Eventually they captured one like it - USS President - after it had been damaged in an accident and copied it. I think it was still one of the fastest warships afloat right up to about the Civil War.

Hey Michael59,

Having a malfunctioning heart doesn't in itself mean you are doomed. My heart was damaged after a minor heart attack back in 2007. I don't know any actual percentage figures. And it does effect me a bit, get muscle aches quite easily. But If I take it easy most of the time I'm ok.

Just try to relax and don't think about it too much. Often sitting out in the shade is more relieving that sitting in an air conditioned room.

Hang in there, you'll be fine. The heat will pass.

One trick that always works well during heat waves is to keep your bath tub full of cold water. Periodically just sit and soak in the water. You would be amazed how much better your body feels after soaking for a little while in cold water.

Doesn't that make your domicile very humid?
