Went out to find the other spring and I think I took a turn I shouldn't have and didn't find it yet...I'll go back out that way tomorrow morning, that part of the woods has changed a little, I think the last time I was there was 8 or 10 years ago, maybe longer...I did come close to what had to be a huge beehive, we were crossing a more open area where the trees were spread out more and heard the hive, never saw it...The buzzing/humming of hundreds or more bees echoing around us, I'm not sure how close we were but they were loud at one point, we must have been passing close...Didn't want to piss them off, just keep moving, don't idle around that spot...Just ate dinner and resting at the campsite now...

Oh it turns out I do have a faint signal here, never had one in the past, but I turned on roaming there it was but it comes and goes, it isn't a steady signal and drops out quite frequently...

Fratty and out of touch.
The smoke is so thick here from the wildfires. I thought it was cloud cover when I first awoke. We are having a drought and I was happy/relieved that the farmers were going to get some rain. Turned out it's just smoke so thick that it blocks out the sun. :(
Reminds me of one of those Murphy's Law sayings: "The light at the end of the tunnel is actually the headlight of an oncoming train."

The idea of keeping local copies and working offline is getting a bit dated.

How so?...I think its the most secure, keeping local backups and software at home, some software you have to connect online to get an update though...All my digital files are backed up twice, in case my backup drive fails lol, I got another one...Its extra work but its secure...

I have a home server that allows connection to any computer device I have but its never connected to the internet...
Now I have an external USB 2 TB drive smaller than my iPhone that I got for like, $50. Amazing. Probably not quite so bullet resistant.
I want three lol...I have a few 1tb drives and a couple 1tb SSD drives but not 2tb...I like to divide them up, put a couple or three partitions in those large drives in case of failure of one, the drive isn't completely lost...

Wild dogs and wolves wouldn't be scared of the rain, or would they?

I would assume not but in these mountains I don't think there are any wolves, we do have lots of coyotes though, I heard a bunch of them last night, and there's also panther, bear, and bobcats as predators here...

Here's an old apple tree I visit every time I camp or hike this area, its about a mile or so hike from my campsite out in a small meadow by itself...I'm usually here in early spring or early autumn so I've never seen apples still on the tree...There's a lot of them, small red ones about the size of a golf ball, I ate 5 of them lol, might bring some back with me...

A comment about the general trend toward cloud services because of ubiquitous broadband. Infrastructure, Software and Platform As A Service would be the norm in enterprise business today. Still no lack of physical hardware to be found but the trend has been toward virtualization and decentralization for years. Lost a critical application? At one time it was hours to restore, now it's only .... oh wait it's already restored and back in service because it was just a virtual instance. You have a vendor in front of you pitching a lot of hardware then keep your finger on the 'drop him into the volcano with the lava sharks' button. Racking and stacking individual application servers is dated. What you do see instead is one large robust machine doing the work of many and boatloads of switches and appliances. There are still things that still have to physically touch an interface, especially in telecom apps.

A large Evil cable entertainment company I had to contend with set up a building in Manhattan with a new IT deployment structure and I've wondered how commonplace it is. You come in, sit down at your desk and your company machine is right there in front of you. Keyboard, mouse, monitor, touchscreen, whatever. Have at it, watch kitten videos while you pretend to work, do your thing. But peek under the desk and there's almost nothing there - just a box about the size of an 8 track tape that the peripherals plug in to. Some of these used traditional wired ethernet connections, some were on the internal wifi. Throw away network appliances that allow you to access your virtual desktop. Think about all the things and staff no longer necessary. Lose something important? Got it back right away. Don't blink.

All fine and well but at home I have 4 backup drives and rotate them. Two get locked up in separate fireproof safes. Usually make drive partitions and try not to keep anything I care about in the OS partition. A backup strategy appropriate to what I need.

I know people will plant their Christmas trees in the mountains. Someone probably planted it there. Those are really small apples. Hey, it could be the tree of knowledge. :D

I'm hiking out to that tree later today and pick some apples to bring home with me...They were delicious and I didn't get poisoned and die from eating them yesterday lol...

Hot & humid today. Got the bike out for a couple of hours. A little hot with the gear on stuck at a light but before long the only things taking note of my passage was horses & moo cows. Feels great at speed

I've thought about making jam before but never tried...Honestly, I can only eat apples one way, fresh off the tree...If apples are cooked or processed any other way I don't like the taste of them...I don't like apple sauce nor apple pie lol...I do like to drink apple juice but thats it, fresh apples or apple juice...

I didn't get a chance to get back to that tree yesterday because we had a lot of storms passing through the area...I'm planning to go there later this morning after I pack up my campsite, I'm heading back home today...

Oil change and tire rotation on my wife's Forester. cute little car with wee little parts. I have a bunch of oil change window stickers from some obscure old place in Milwaukee and get a weird charge out of putting it on. I like futzing in the garage.

Well my tires need rotating and I think I am due for a new battery anytime now. It doesn't have any dead bugs on it but it does have a lot of city grime and dust and pine needles on it. I hope it starts tomorrow because I haven't been out for a month and I really need supplies.

5 years is about it for car batteries anymore, especially for someone who lives up there with the polar bears and Santa Claus and so forth
