The State of Ufology

It's odd that they should scare animals, but there are too many reports to ignore it. Perhaps there is some ultrasonic frequency they emit.
Might very well be! There is a thread on it, and examples in the article archive, here:

By the time I'd seen one for myself, I'd already read several books on the subject — Including The Report On Unidentified Flying Objects by Edward Ruppelt. My older brother and his wife introduced me to the subject after they had witnessed one in Calgary years before. So as soon as I saw the object I knew exactly what it was. This was not one of those cases where it could have been a misidentification of a manmade object or natural phenomenon. My main feelings were firstly excitement, then when it zipped away, I felt disappointed that I hadn't been given the chance to get a close-up look.
Yeah, that's the problem with a lot of skeptics; they don't address the cases where the object(s) are close enough or behave in ways at close range that eliminate mundane possibilities. There are conversions of skeptics in the old article database too.

Technically, although the object in our sighting was at some distance, it covers most of the requirements for a Close Encounter.
In the Hynek/Vallée UFO Classification system, it would be classed as a CE-1

There are other sightings similar to your own. iirc, there was supposed to have been a UFO encounter (during Vietnam War, I think), where the same kind of object appeared on the battlefield, was fired on, and then it emitted a blinding light that later made the soldiers very sick.

Ah, here it is. Korean War.
Hey thanks. Very interesting. If I remember correctly, one of my old UFO books said that spheres are ( or at least were ) the most common UFO shape — not the iconic flying saucer.
Perhaps these days the black triangles or tic-tacs are more common. Although technically speaking, the tic-tac shape could reasonably be thought of as "cigar shaped".

Here is another rather disturbing incident that reminds me of what you saw:
