The Wire is a crime drama that originally ran on HBO from 2002 to 2008. It is set in Baltimore, and highlights a different institution of the city in relationship to law enforcement in each season, while retaining continuity of characters. It strives for a high level of realism for a fictional show. It didn't have huge viewership and never won any major awards during its run, but "is now often termed one of the greatest shows in television history.[6]"
It came to my attention recently by happenstance, and I decided to take a look at it it. So far, I'm impressed. Obviously, if you're not into crime dramas, it may not be for you. Also, it has an unusually large cast, so there are a lot of characters to keep track of.
Unfortunately, it's not streaming for free anywhere, but can be viewed on HBO Max.
It was this character, the criminal Omar Little, played by the late Michael K. Williams, who got me curious about the series.
