To what extent is the media controlled?

It seems these days all the major channels carry the same five or so main stories, together with secondary, celeb or trending pieces.
In 1983, 50 corporations controlled 90 percent of US media, today five conglomerates control 90 percent.
The standard view is that the “free” in free press means a press that is free from government control, and this, in turn, means a free market press. A free market press serves the interest of a free society, the reasoning goes, because market competition will guarantee an open arena for the exchange and dissemination of ideas.

Nick Redfern suggested that in the sixties Governments became more proactive with monitoring and rapid response to UFO reports, disinformation being used to limit widespread credence being given.

Whilst I can see the above suggests the corporate media are almost controlled stenographers for pre-scripted narratives, surely the internet is full of millions of nooks and crannies and social media that make it difficult to suppress facts?

The media is under corporate control and is politically biased as well as biased in other areas.
The press of today is little more than a shadow of what it once was.
I stopped listening and watching all major Medias years ago..
