Retired top FBI counterintelligence agent who led Trump-Russia probe arrested for own ties to Russian oligarch​

A former senior FBI counterintelligence official who spearheaded the Trump-Russia probe was arrested and charged over his own alleged ties to a sanctioned Russian oligarch amid the war in Ukraine.

Charles McGonigal, the former Special Agent in Charge of FBI’s Counterintelligence Division in New York, who retired in 2018, is accused of violating U.S. sanctions by agreeing to provide services to Oleg Deripaska, a sanctioned Russian oligarch. He is charged alongside Sergey Shestakov, a former Soviet and Russian diplomat who later became a U.S. citizen and a Russian interpreter for courts and government offices, through a five-count indictment unsealed in Manhattan federal court Monday.

McGonigal and Shestakov both were arrested Saturday. The indictment is a rare move by federal prosecutors to bring charges against a senior former FBI official before a federal grand jury.

Though not referenced in or related to the indictment, McGonigal, while serving as chief of the cybercrimes section at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., was one of the first bureau officials to learn of allegations George Papadopoulos, a campaign adviser for Donald Trump, boasted that he knew Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton, launching the investigation into alleged Russian election interference known as Operation Crossfire Hurricane.

'As a general rule, we don’t want to get in the way of open, public and democratic debate on Meta’s platforms – especially in the context of elections in democratic societies like the United States,' Nick Clegg, the company's president of global affairs, wrote in a blog post on the move. 'The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying – the good, the bad and the ugly – so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box,' he wrote. The move comes two months after Trump announced he was running for reelection in 2024, although his campaign has been low-key to date, fought mostly online.

If Trump's visit accomplished that fantastic ! I would've thought he'd bring a media circus.
If it's so safe there I'd suggest the officials saying that should book a hotel and stay a while, take a shower and drink the water. One thing's for certain - there is some serious bullshit coming out of our government. I honestly wondered if there might be some mass hysteria at work but it doesn't look like it.

Check this out from upstate New York Hoosick Falls a few years ago. Similar but reversed - the Fed was saying there's a serious problem and the State denied it. Another big thanks to Andrew Cuomo.

Trump heads to East Palestine before ANY senior White House official to donate water and supplies: Ex-President will visit toxic train derailment site amid fury over Biden administration's lack of response​

Donald Trump is visiting East Palestine, a small Ohio community of 4,700, upended by a toxic train derailment on Wednesday – 19 days after the crash, but still before President Joe Biden or Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Republicans are reeling that Biden has not visited Ohio for himself, or at least deployed Buttigieg there to survey the damage and speak with local leaders about how the administration can best assist.

Buttigieg, however, assures that he will visit the derailment site - next to the border with Pennsylvania and about 35 minutes from Pittsburgh - claiming he did not want to preemptively visit just for the sake of a photo-op, which he suggested Trump is doing.

On February 3, a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed earlier and released large amounts of toxic chemicals into the air, water and ground, forcing evacuations as residents feared for their health. Some complained of headaches and other symptoms.

The crowds lined the streets and some chanted 'no more Joe' as they awaited the arrival of the former president.

Yes, Trump is a politician and opportunist. But just think how inept the Biden administration was to open this door for him. They had the bully pulpit, the resources, and early opportunities to more or less freeze him out. But instead they behaved like political amateurs. smh

I can't believe Biden went to Ukraine before Ohio, his administration including himself royally screwed up handling this...A local friend of mine said his Aunt lived about 20 miles from ground zero of that train disaster and she said it's much much worse than being reported...I used the word 'lived' because she's now here in North Carolina with her sister...She moved out of her house soon after the train wreck and moved here to NC...

There's more to that story for sure, a lot of people are pissed but there's political strategy at work and we'll have to see where that goes. What's red hot today goes away tomorrow. What about the Special Master Secret Documents Train Derailment Kids in Cages things?

I've read a few articles that say that Carlson hates Trump's guts. Why a talking head spewing nonsense is any different on one ridiculous outlet versus another is beyond me. So the talking heads don't believe the crap they spout - their employment contracts are not required to are they? 'Journalism' is broadly defined here - I look at all that as entertainment, no different than The View.

But I still get the impression Don Lemon actually means it ..... har har har. Maybe he can have lunch with Jussie Smollett, Lori Lightfoot and the Cuomo brothers and they can work on their resumes together.
