Uber Suspends Self-Driving Tests After Pedestrian Is Killed In Arizona

Ride along Driver or Computer to blame ??

I guess there's going to be a percentage of deaths whilst testing continues on driverless cars but in this case there was a human backup...So wtf happened there? Was the human asleep? I'd have to blame the human who should have hit the brakes or grabbed the wheel...

An alert driver has about 1 second response time to react do a danger.

A ride along driver could have 5 sec..

Or somewhere in the ballpark of infinity

The computer - - - microsecs, but will it do the right move ?

The computer might swerve to miss one person and run into five...

I would think that the generally drunk driver, still conscious , would probably do a better job than the selfdriving computers that are out there , right now.

Looking at these stats from 2016, I would have thought the crash rate of self driving cars would be half or less off the national average yet the experts expected a lot more accidents...

The researchers concluded that the national crash rate of 4.2 accidents per million miles is higher than the crash rate for self-driving cars, which is 3.2 crashes per million miles. The institute describes these findings as “reversing an initial assumption” that autonomous cars would have a higher incident rate. Jan 11, 2016

I can't see this tech taking off (if you excuse the pun)
who's going to trust a computer with their life? The computer system may be flawless-
the person/s in the car maybe highly vigilant & responsible but that aint going to stop some fucker hacking the system; driving cars under articulated lorries/ into walls etc!!!
No way you'd get me & my family in one of em= now or in 20 years time!
Anyways I thought this system was in the very early stage of testing= why are uber test driving in public? Is this a real story?

Its like people having flying cars its not going to happen.
yeah i agree-- i just can't see how it will work!

the way i see it = if my pc system crashes i lose work= not my life & all those in the vehicle with me & god knows how many more running on the same system! sod that...........

does it matter= it's still computer software.....

be honest (especially if you know & understand computers/ software etc & how it all works- & sometimes doesn't)

would you REALLY trust a computer with yours & your families life!?

Sure... just look at modern airliners ..

But not the human programmer writing the software

is it really the same? if auto-pilot fails they have all the time in the world to take manual control.

driving on a busy road/ motorway & auto-drive fails??? come on, get real:wink8:

Its tougher for a computer system to drive a car safely, than to fly a jumbo jet

Yet, they are out on the roads in greater numbers every month

I agree and it makes sense, less things to hit in the air compared to driving on a street...

Metanoia
Already happening. Google and Uber testdriving their latest lines of code in Arizona cuz of the non existing / lax regulations there

The only safe way is to have a human monitor in the cars with them at all times.
