Three volcanoes erupting at same time — and they're steadily growing stronger

Three volcanoes on a remote Alaskan island chain have been erupting simultaneously for almost two weeks. The eruptions do not pose a threat to any nearby community due to the location of the Aleutian island chain, an 800-mile stretch of islands that ring the Bering Sea. The eruption started almost two weeks ago and have steadily grown stronger, but they do not yet pose a concern to experts.

The Pavlof Volcano at the end of the Alaska Peninsula is the closest to any population; the volcano is emitting low levels of ash, which has shifted the warning level from yellow to orange, which is "an eruption underway that poses limited hazards," Insider reported.

The nearest community, Cold Bay, sits about 35 miles from the volcano.

The two other volcanoes – the Great Sitkin Volcano and Semisopochnoi Volcano – sit hundreds of miles away. The latter volcano spewed an ash cloud about 10,000 feet into the air on an uninhabited island. Meanwhile, the Great Sitkin Volcano has a confirmed lava fountain at its summit, which people in the nearby community of Adak can see.

"This lava fountain is kind of unusual for Great Sitkin, but it’s been fairly passive at this point," said Chris Waythomas, a geologist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Waythomas called the Great Sitkin eruption as "fairly passive," but he said if activity increases, Adak could get ashfall from Great Sitkin, located on an island about 27 miles (43.45 kilometers) away. Scientists continue to closely monitor the volcanoes for signs of changes.

A 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of the Alaskan Peninsula early Saturday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

There is volcanos erupting in the canary islands that is one to keep an eye on. They say if the island breaks and slides into the sea it could cause a mega tsunami on the east coast of the USA. Some say it is possible that it could break in smaller pieces at a time and the effect would not be near as strong, but if it all goes in the ocean at one time computer models show waves 130-160 feet high are possible. It may fizzle out and not much happen but the chance is still there at this time.

Glowing lava sprays up to 200ft high as the world's biggest active volcano erupts: Hawaii's Mauna Loa sends fire, smoke and ash across the Big Island as local are told to 'prepare for the worst'

Officials have warned the 200,000 Big Island residents to prepare for a worst-case scenario even though the lava flow is not yet endangering towns, saying an eruption can be 'very dynamic, and the location and advance of lava flows can change rapidly.' Lava could eventually reach neighborhoods as it flows downhill though it could take a week or more for molten rock to reach populated areas. Mauna Loa is belching sulfur dioxide and other volcanic gases which form volcanic smog, or vog, when they mix with vapor, oxygen and dust in sunlight.

A new gas vent seemingly appeared in the last week at Canada's Garibaldi Lake volcano which has not erupted for 11,700 years. This vent was seen spewing gasses into the air, rising more than 50 meters into the air. While still under investigation, if this is indeed a fumarole, it would only mark the third volcano within Canada known to have fumaroles after Mount Meager & Mount Edziza.

One of the world's most dangerous volcanoes was found to actually have produced a far higher rate of highly destructive VEI 4 and VEI 5 eruptions in the last 5,000 years. This means that the Mount Agung volcano has a greater risk of producing a repeat eruption during its next eruptive sequence when compared to the previous perception.
