Wars & Rumours of Wars

I predict that now that Putin's had his day in the sun being treated as the leader of a superpower he'll go back to ignoring all this and continue on as if nothing's happened.

The real winner in all that was the Alaskan that got that nifty Ural. I bet the DMV in Anchorage isn't terribly different than the one right down the road and I can only imagine dealing with the clerk when you tell them this was a gift from Vladimir Putin. There's actually a form for that but I think getting Vlad to sign it might be difficult
Obviously standard play in politics is that everybody is playing stupid. In this case "stupid" is that Russia is winning attrition war and Ukraine is running out of fighting menpower.

So all this talks about "peace" are just a headfake for West to catch-up and recuperate and re-arm Ukrainians so they can re-attack Russians with a renewed strength. Now, why would Russians be so stupid to let Ukrainians recuperate when they are winning attrition war. Obviously Western media is playing "stupid" and talking up "piece", which is not a "peace" at al but "pause for rearmament". So, Trump knows that, Putin knows that, Macron knows that, Starmer knows that etc. etc., but general public doesn't know that because general public is "stupid", so Trump, Putin, Macron, Starmer etc. "talk stupid" to "stupid".

So when one removes "playing stupid" and does reality check why would anybody in his sain mind let his mortal enemy refresh his strength?

That is a question asked & answered by the IDF and why they will likely take over Gaza, which I hope they do and end this already. Pausing for months an releasing some of the hostages isn't good for anybody except Hamas.

Putin wanted to talk nuclear arms control like the good old days. While they do have many excellent modern weapons I suspect that massive nuclear inventory they have is aging and costing them $$ they can ill afford right now and reducing them by negotiation a useful alternative.

I don't know if anyone else has the same problem, but MSN.com links do not work for me in the Firefox, or Brave browsers. It might be something to do with my location. MSN is a news aggregator, though, and here is the original source for that article:

A couple weeks ago I fixed that when I post links, you should be able to click on the MSN links provided, it was due to the location tags which I have since not copied into the posted links...

Houthis confirm their prime minister killed in Israeli strike

Yemen's Houthi rebel movement has confirmed that its self-proclaimed Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi was killed in an Israeli air strike earlier this week.
The Iran-backed group said several other senior officials were killed when the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted Yemen's capital, Sanaa, on Thursday.
The IDF said Rahawi and other senior Houthi officials were "eliminated" when Israeli fighter jets struck a gathering in the Sanaa area.
The Houthis have controlled much of north-western Yemen since 2014, after ousting the internationally recognised government from Sanaa and triggering a devastating civil war.

The Houthis said Rahawi had been killed alongside several Houthi ministers, though it did not name the others.
Saudi Arabian news site al-Hadath reports the Houthis' foreign minister, as well as the ministers for justice, youth and sports, social affairs and labour, were killed.
The office of Mahdi al-Mashat, the Houthis' president, said that several other ministers "sustained moderate and serious injuries" as a result of the strike.
It added that Muhammad Ahmed Miftah, the Houthi deputy prime minister, would assume Rahawi's role.
Rahawi had held his post since August 2024, and was largely seen as a figurehead of the movement instead of being part of the top decision-making circle that plans military operations.
Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the movement's ultimate leader, as well as the group's defence minister and the chief of staff, were not said to be among the casualties in Thursday's attack.
The IDF said in a statement late on Saturday that it had carried out the strike "within a few hours" of receiving intelligence concerning the gathering.
It said it was still assessing the operation's full impact.
Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis have regularly launched missiles at Israel and targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, saying they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians.
Israel has, in turn, carried out air strikes on targets in Houthi-held parts of Yemen, with the stated aim of curtailing Houthi attacks.
Last week, Israel said it had hit Houthi targets in Sanaa, in response to the movement's missile attack which Israel said carried cluster munitions.

Great stuff.

That's how world order based on rules should work: "I don't like your government, I blow it up"., so if Putin is to blow up German government that would be according to "world order based on rules".

All they did is take a page out of our own GWOT playbook and enhance it a little. If the Godless Commies had the ability to do stuff like that they probably would but finesse isn't their style.

Well Putin had countless opportunities to use Oresniks to target Zelensky and Ukrainian government, but as a good Christian he didn't.

'We are closer to war than any time since WW2', warns Poland's PM

Poland's Prime Minister today warned 'we are closer to war than any time since World War Two' after his country was forced to shoot down Russian drones that violated its airspace.
Polish media is now reporting that Donald Tusk has requested the triggering of NATO's Article 4, where member countries can bring an issue to the attention of the North Atlantic Council. Poland's security council will also meet to discuss an 'appropriate response'.

More than eight million Poles were ordered to hide in their homes as the drones flew overhead, with debris from one shot-down device crashing into a house. The full force of NATO's fighter planes was unleashed to shoot down the drones.

After the organisation's patriot defence systems detected the drones with their radars, Polish F-16 fighter jets, Dutch F-35, Italian surveillance aircraft, and NATO's MRTT mid-air refuelling aircraft all came together to counter the drones.

The downing of Russia's unmanned aerial vehicles marked the first-ever direct engagement between Moscow and NATO. It has long insisted it wants no confrontation with Putin. Kyiv has accused Russia of deliberately invading Poland's airspace with 24 UAVs to test the West's defences.
Warsaw blasted Russia's 'act of aggression' amid fears Putin is testing the West's defences and escalating the war in Ukraine, in Russia's largest escalation of the war yet.

On Wednesday, Tusk held an extraordinary meeting with top officials after Russia's actions. Senior army officials are present at the gathering.
He said a number of drones that posed direct threats to Russia were shot down in a joint effort with NATO allies, and warned that Poland is ready to react. The prime minister added that he was in communication with allies.

Trump's fury at airstrikes on Qatar: White House is blindsided by deadly IDF attack on its Gulf ally

Donald Trump has hit out at Israel's air strike on Qatar that killed five members of Hamas as its delegation prepared for talks to try to end the conflict in Gaza.

The White House admitted the US President felt 'very bad' about the attack, with his press secretary Karoline Leavitt adding that the incident 'does not advance Israel or America's goals'.

Mr Trump said on Tuesday night the US military informed his administration that Israel was attacking Qatar.

He posted: 'I immediately directed special envoy Steve Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did, however, unfortunately, too late to stop the attack.

'I view Qatar as a strong ally and friend and feel very badly about the location of the attack. I want ALL of the hostages, and bodies of the dead, released, and this War to END, NOW!'

Qatar's prime minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said the US warned his country of Israel's attack ten minutes after it began.

He also said his country 'reserves the right' to respond to Israel's 'blatant attack', which is a 'pivotal moment' for the region.

The UK was not notified of the action – and Keir Starmer condemned the rocket attacks on Tuesday, saying they 'violate Qatar's sovereignty and risk further escalation across the region'.

Trump says Europe should shoot down Russian aircraft as he continues to sour on Putin's war

Donald Trump insisted that NATO nations should feel emboldened to shoot down Russian planes if they enter their countries' airspace. It comes after Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace this week amid the ongoing war with Ukraine. Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at United Nations headquarters on Tuesday, Trump suggested that the U.S. might back-up North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries forced to take action if Russia provokes them.

'Do you think that NATO countries should shoot down Russian aircraft if they enter their airspace?' a reporter asked Trump. 'Yes I do,' he replied.

Another reporter asked Trump if the U.S. would 'backup' or 'help out' NATO allies who did shoot down Russian planes. Trump said it 'depends on the circumstance, but we're very strong towards NATO.'

World leaders are gathered in New York City this week for the United Nations General Assembly. Trump delivered remarks to the entire body on Tuesday morning and is engaging in bilateral and multilateral meetings through the afternoon – including with Zelensky.

Agreed and I'm sure the IDF already has a plan in place for that.
I assure that IDF doesn't have plan for that, because they just missed the opportunity. There are thousands of these extremists, you kill one, another one steps in. Palestinian people should have a chance to be represented by civilian parties that will work towards peace and prosperity, not a constant war.

U.S. has seized survivors after strike on suspected drug-carrying vessel in Caribbean, AP sources say

Oct 17, 2025 12:29 PM EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. has seized survivors after a strike Thursday on a suspected drug-carrying vessel in the Caribbean, the first since President Donald Trump began launching deadly attacks in the region this summer, a defense official and another person familiar with the matter said Friday.

It is believed to be at least the sixth strike since early September, and the first to result in survivors who were picked up by the U.S. military. It was not immediately clear what would be done with the individuals, who the person said were believed to be held aboard a U.S. military vessel.

They confirmed the strike on the condition of anonymity because it has not yet been publicly acknowledged by Trump’s administration. This strike on Thursday brings the death toll from the Trump administration’s military action against vessels in the region to at least 28.

Trump justified the strikes by asserting that the United States is engaged in an “armed conflict” with drug cartels, relying on the same legal authority used by the Bush administration when it declared a war on terror after the Sept. 11 attacks. That includes the ability to capture and detain combatants and to use lethal force to take out their leadership.

The survivors of this strike now face an unclear future and legal landscape, including questions about whether they are now considered to be prisoners of war or defendants in a criminal case. The White House did not comment on the strike.

Reuters was first to report news of the strike late Thursday.

US military flew supersonic B-1 bombers up to the coast of Venezuela

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military flew a pair of supersonic, heavy bombers up to the coast of Venezuela on Thursday, a little over a week after another group of American bombers made a similar journey as part of a training exercise to simulate an attack.
The U.S. military has built up an unusually large force in the Caribbean Sea and the waters off of Venezuela, raising speculation that President Donald Trump could try to topple Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Maduro faces charges of narcoterrorism in the U.S.
Adding to the speculation, the U.S. military since early September has been carrying out lethal strikes on vessels in the waters off Venezuela that Trump says are trafficking drugs.
According to flight tracking data, a pair of B-1 Lancer bombers took off from Dyess Air Force Base in Texas on Thursday and flew through the Caribbean and up to the coast of Venezuela. A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military operations, confirmed that a training flight of B-1s took place in the Caribbean.

The B-1 bomber can carry more bombs than any other plane in the U.S. inventory.

A similar flight of slower B-52 Stratofortress bombers was conducted in the region last week. The bombers were joined by Marine Corps F-35B stealth fighter jets — a squadron is currently based in Puerto Rico — for what the Pentagon called a “bomber attack demo” in photos online.

When Trump was asked about Thursday’s B-1 flight and if it was meant to ramp up military pressure on Venezuela, he said, “it’s false, but we’re not happy with Venezuela for a lot of reasons. Drugs being one of them.”

The U.S. force in the Caribbean includes eight warships, P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, MQ-9 Reaper drones and an F-35 fighter squadron. A submarine has also been confirmed to be operating in the waters off South America.
Trump on Wednesday said he has the “legal authority” to carry out the strikes on the alleged drug-carrying boats and suggested similar strikes could be done on land.
“We will hit them very hard when they come in by land,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “We’re totally prepared to do that. And we’ll probably go back to Congress and explain exactly what we’re doing when we come to the land.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday that the military had conducted its ninth strike, killing three people in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It followed a strike Tuesday night, also in the eastern Pacific, that killed two people and brought the overall death toll from the strikes to at least 37.
The latest pair of strikes expanded the Trump administration’s campaign against drug trafficking in South America from the waters of the Caribbean to the eastern Pacific.
Hegseth has drawn a direct comparison between the war on terrorism that the U.S. declared after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the Trump administration’s crackdown.

“Our message to these foreign terrorist organizations is we will treat you like we have treated al-Qaeda,” Hegseth told reporters on Thursday at the White House.
“We will find you, we will map your networks, we will hunt you down, and we will kill you,” he added.

Putin is amassing nuclear weapons and attack submarines in the Arctic Circle as Russia 'prepares for war with Nato'

Putin is amassing nuclear weapons and attack submarines in the Arctic Circle as his country prepares for war with NATO, Norway has said. Norway's Defence Minister Tore Sandvik claimed his country had found Russia had been increasing its military presence in the Arctic, particularly in the Kola peninsula.

The politician also said Vladimir Putin had been attempting to take over the Arctic region where its fleet is based to block shipping routes to Nato allies if war broke out. 'Russia is building up on the Kola peninsula... where one of the largest arsenals of nuclear warheads in the world is located,' Mr Sandvik told The Telegraph.

'They [the nuclear weapons] are not only pointed towards Norway, but towards the UK and over the pole towards Canada and the US. We are the eyes and ears of Nato in this area, and we see that they're testing new weapons, for example hypersonic missiles, and they are testing nuclear-driven torpedoes and nuclear warheads.'

The Kola peninsula, famed for accommodating the world's most condensed nuclear weapon stockpile, plays a key role in the Kremlin's ability to deliver a 'second strike'. The term 'second strike' refers to a nation's ability to retaliate following an initial nuclear strike by a rival.
