More than 14 people have reportedly been killed when two tornadoes hit southern Alabama on Sunday. Lee County sheriff confirmed at least 10 people were dead, and family members told WSFA 12 one of the fatalities was an eight-year-old girl. Spokeswoman Rita Smith with the Lee County Emergency Management Agency says she wasn't authorized to release further details of the deaths in the community of Beauregard, Alabama, but says they occurred along with numerous injuries.

In all, at least 695 people died and 2,027 were injured, the majority in southern Illinois. Three states, 13 counties, and more than 19 communities, four of which were effectively effaced (several of these and other rural areas never recovered), were in the path of the record 3.5 hour duration tornado. Approximately 15,000 homes were destroyed by the Tri-State Tornado.

Meanwhile, the Daulatpur–Saturia tornado in Bangladesh in 1989 was the deadliest of all.
