Smollett's grandmother Molly and his brother Joel spoke in court to ask the judge not to send him to prison. The attorney's lawyers also read out a letter from Samuel L. Jackson and his wife, asking the judge to be lenient. The long legal saga will finally draw to a close at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse in Chicago. Smollett was convicted of lying to police earlier this year. He claimed that on January 29, 2019, he was attacked by two white thugs wearing red hats who called him a 'f****t' and the N-word. At trial, a jury ruled that Smollett had in fact hired his two black friends, Abel and Ola Osundairo - a pair of brothers with Nigerian heritage- to stage the attack.

Jussie Smollett has been sentenced to 150 days of jail and 30 months of probation. He will have to pay back the City of Chicago just over $120,000 in restitution and was also fined $25,000.
Following the sentencing, he had an emotional outburst and screamed “I am not suicidal and I did not do it.”
He got a slap on the wrist. A hard slap, maybe. But I never actually expected him to serve hard time.
