And another thing .... in the vein of keep up or dry up:
I have an old Auto Parts store near me that I've used for decades. At one time they were the thousand pound gorilla in the area - they had or could get anything and the price was almost always right. They are a franchise and the chain is like AutoValue or some vaguely generic sounding thing. Zero useful online presence.
Now when I go in there I see a business that hasn't changed it's model and is ossifying. Essentially the same three guys behind the counter except by now two of them alone probably weigh over half a ton put together. They are generally nice and knowledgeable about what they sell up to a point. I do still get a few things there but they are basically small stuff like filters & oil. No way to know the price in advance. No way to see if there might be some other part or manufacturer available. You ask, you wait while a two-fingered-typer cranks away, and you pay - and hopefully not with a credit card because that requires them to have to get up and it's painful to watch. Then come back in a day or two to pick up whatever it was you ordered because the chances of it sitting on a shelf are less than 50/50.
Contrast that to an Autozone, Advance Auto or other chain. Nice clean glitzy places almost always overpriced as hell. You might get a somewhat knowledgeable person but more often than not it's some kid (who maybe just got fired from Home Depot ......). But, their websites and apps allow me to bypass that, they offer coupons and free store pickup and God Forbid, actually have some odd old things in stock. You can occasionally 'get a good deal there'
Sign of the times. Our expectations have changed and it's all about technology enabling self service. Hell, you can even order your Dunkin Donuts coffee on the run and maybe a Dominoes pizza from your stupid phone now. I think that may be carrying it a bit too far but they are at least in the game
