I had to write about this because it's blowing my mind - we're into the 9th season (episode 5) of The Walking Dead, and they're at the top of their game. I can't believe that I can say that. By the 9th season, any show that's lasted that long is slowly and torturously circling the drain...the writers are obviously bored out of their minds after painting themselves into a variety of inescapable corners...the actors look tired and are phoning in their performances...the directors aren't even trying to compose cinematic scenes anymore...it's just sad and depressing and if you can bear to keep watching at all, you regret it every time.
Somehow, The Walking Dead has managed to escape this lifeless, shambling fate that's faced nearly every other TV show that has lasted more than about 5 seasons.
I don't know how they're doing it. Apparently there's a Walking Dead comic book series - maybe they're getting all this fresh material from those folks. But whatever it is, I hope they keep it up, because I've been watching this show for years and it just suddenly got more awesome than ever before.
Hot damn.
