Massive explosions and a blaze at a military ammunition depot in The Former Soviet republic of the Ukraine have forced authorities to evacuate 30,000 people and close airspace over the region, officials have said.

The blasts occurred late on Tuesday local time at a military base near Kalynivka in the Vynnytsya region, 270 kilometres west of Kiev, Ukrainian emergencies service said in a statement.

Four residential buildings were damaged by the fire and one person was injured, but no casualties had been reported.

The military said rescue teams were evacuating nearby villages in the region, bussing more than 30,000 people out of the area.

Arriving in the region hours later, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said "external factors" were behind the incident.

Authorities said they turned off the electricity and gas supply to the town.

Social media users reported hearing loud explosions as far away as the capital Kiev.

Local media said the explosion was the fourth ammunition depot explosion in the past two years.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

wow.....that's equal to a fairly large nuclear explosion if it all went off at once......that's almost 190 kilotons.

Thats a huge explosion, it's disturbing they say this is the 4th munitions explosion in 2 years...There must be terrorist activities going on I would think or sabotage which is still considered terrorism...

Sounds like a good possibility......if all the 188k tons of explosive did ignite then in this case it wasn't just an accident.

I heard the other day it could be pre-war sabotage. You would think a military would have very strict procedures about munition storage.

Its scare tactics,, just like previous years ' gas war ', when they cut of the gas supply,, or the invasion of crimea..

It all boils down to.. If the Ukraine teams up with Russia, all their problems will disappear over night, literally..

( From Russia with love ) or else...

The entire store would not be in one holding area.....but in numerous smaller ones.

You're right

Huge explosion at Ukraine ammunition depot prompts mass evacuation

" Vladislav Seleznev, a spokesman for the Ukrainian general staff, said on Wednesday that the military were investigating various possible causes of the fire, but did not elaborate.

He said drone footage showed 70 percent of the ammunition at Kalynivka at survived the explosions thanks to routine safety measures. "

Also

The Ukrainian government blamed that incident on Russia or the separatist forces it arms and supplies in the neighbouring Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

Well that's still the equivalent of a 56 kiloton atom bomb with 70% remaining.

Good to hear they use safety measures.
