A Mystery That Haunts The Road

As Above So Below

Late on the night of January 16, 2008, Anthony was driving along the B3212 road when he had a terrifying encounter with the unknown. It was an encounter that easily paralleled the many and varied reports of the Hairy Hands that surfaced way back in the 1910s and 1920s.

According to Anthony, it was around 11.00 p.m., and he had been visiting a customer in Postbridge, and was now homeward bound to the city of Bristol. It turned out to be a journey that he would never, ever likely forget.

Anthony had barely left Postbridge, when his skin began to feel distinctly cold and clammy, and a sense of dread and fear completely enveloped him. And the fact that there seemed to be no logical reason for this only heightened Anthony’s fear and concern.

He explained further that perhaps two minutes after the atmosphere in his car became oppressive, fear-filled, and even somewhat malevolent, he felt his hands begin to “go numb.” He added: “I actually thought I was having a stroke.” Fortunately, it was no stroke.

In some ways, however, it was far worse.

Anthony could only look on in both complete horror and disbelief as, just as had been the case so many decades earlier, a very large pair of hair-covered hands, or “paws,” as he intriguingly described them, encased his own hands, and then suddenly attempted to forcibly steer the car towards the edge of the road and skidded onto the cold, moonlit moors.

To his credit, Anthony struggled valiantly with the wheel and, on three occasions, fought off the actions of the spectral, hairy intruder in his midst.

Interestingly, after the third attempt, said Anthony, the hands simply vanished into thin air, amid a brief flash of light. The shaken driver floored the accelerator and did not stop until he reached one of the service stations on the M5 motorway.

The mysterious hairy intruder, it seems, had struck once again. Fortunately, however, on this occasion it did not succeed in achieving its deadly goal.

Here's another report of big hairy hands grabbing the steering wheel...That's really strange...

Definitely not a helping hand...BBC News

Picture this; you're driving the narrow moors lane near Postbridge and Princetown, its dark, cold and a typical moors night.

All of a sudden the steering wheel or handlebars are grabbed by a gruesome pair of hairy, calloused hands that are inhumanly strong and do their utmost to fight you off the road.

That's a story that's been repeated many times since its first suggested incident in June 1921 when a worker at Dartmoor Prison was killed as his motorcycle became uncontrollable and crashed.

The tale was related by his children who were riding in the sidecar, all they knew was their father shouting at them to get off the bike and apparently wrestling with the controls.

They jumped clear, he didn't.

This was repeated again sometime later, another motorcyclist, this time with a pillion passenger, seemingly driven off the road approaching the same spot.

This time the passenger saw things more clearly and insisted he saw a large hairy hand grasp the handlebars and forcibly upset the bike.

It seems though that its not just motorists that are at risk from the devil's digits, any campers in the area have need to fear too.

In 1924 a young couple were camping in a caravan in the area and the woman was woken in the middle of the night by a heart-racing fear.

Her bunk faced the caravan window and up it she saw crawling a large hand, covered in hair and, she said, exuding an intent to do her and her husband harm.

Instinctively the lady made the sign of the cross and said the hand balked and made its way away.

The tale has arisen again and again and the area has become a notorious area for accidents, many of the survivors giving the story of feeling or seeing the large rough hands, covered in hair grabbing at them and trying to drive them off the road.

Strangely for a legend some of the most skeptical people remain the locals. Many suggest it's all down to 'grockles' trying to drive narrow, high walled roads far too fast.

So are these hands an evil entity, the ghostly form of an ex-Dartmoor Prison inmate or some kind of moors spirit?

Metanoia
There was a report in a now long defunct magazine here called Paranormal Australia where a Yowie ( Bigfoot) reportedly tried to swipe a Ford Fairlane and everyone in it.

The city of Postbridge is in England, B3212 is a rural sometimes winding road that traverses northeast of Postbridge towards Bristol...

Yes.....like I said I guessed. I think where the event occurred would be a good thing to include in the "report" at the beginning. But then it lets people assume what ever they want....and that's what the person wants. Besides it looks as if all three reports were written by the same person.

There are no assumptions, he gave the road name and the cities it traverses between, took less than 1 minute to Google, no mystery of the location...The mystery is the hairy hands, if I ever go to England and rent a car and drive in that area (all highly doubtful on my part) I would make sure to steer clear of that road, no pun intended...:dry8:

I always wanted to go look for the beast of dartmoor......its that area. It obvious he just wasn't someone who writes to much then.....but I did figure it out without even having to google it.

When people making such claims leave out details like this they want the people reading it to make their own assumptions as to what it is. The people likely wouldn't accept his account if they were as detailed as a report should be.
