Paul Manafort, the taciturn lobbyist who served as Trump’s campaign chairman during the summer of 2016, surrendered to federal authorities on Monday morning as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. The New York Times reported that Rick Gates, a Manafort associate, will also turn himself in on Monday. It’s unclear what charges each man faces.

Manafort had been the target of the most aggressive of Mueller’s publicly known efforts over the past six months. He had already reportedly been under Justice Department scrutiny for his business relationships with pro-Kremlin politicians in Ukraine, including former president Viktor Yanukovych. Mueller’s team carried out an early-morning raid in July at Manafort’s Virginia home that reportedly seized business records and financial information. Reports emerged in September that federal investigators obtained a FISA warrant against him as well. Manafort himself has denied any wrongdoing.

He was seen arriving at an FBI office in Washington with his lawyer early on Monday.
An investigation headed by special counsel Robert Mueller is looking into any links between Russia and the Trump campaign.

• The first charges from the probe of possible Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election were unsealed Monday morning

• Paul Manafort and Rick Gates surrendered to face charges including conspiracy against the U.S. and conspiracy to launder money, and pleaded not guilty

• Other charges are being an unregistered agent of a foreign principal, making false and misleading Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) statements and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts

• Manafort is free on $10 million bond, and Gates agreed to $5 million; both are on 'home confinement' as a condition of their pretrial release and they have surrendered their passports

• It's unclear if they have to wear ankle-monitoring bracelets, but that's typical for federal courts who release defendants on bond before their trials

• Sentences could run as high as 80 years for Manafort and 70 for Gates if they are found guilty; a Gates spokesman insists '[t]his fight is just beginning'

• More typical federal sentencing for the crimes charged would be 10 to 12.5 years for Gates and 12.5 to 15 for Manafort

• Special counsel Robert Mueller also revealed Monday that a former Trump foreign policy aid pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about Russian contacts

• Trump tweeted Monday that Manafort's alleged crimes happened 'years ago' and the special counsel's focus should be on 'Crooked Hillary & the Dems'
