Italy suffers another day of heartbreak and horror as coronavirus claims 651 lives in 24 hours bringing devastating death toll to 5,476 while infections soar to nearly 60,000 - with 360 killed in worst-hit region of Lombardy

The coronavirus death toll in Italy's worst-hit region has surpassed 3,450 in the last 24 hours after a rise of 360 fatalities in Lombardy. Yesterday marked the deadliest day for any country to be hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, when the death toll in Italy soared from 739 to 4,825. Ministers in Rome have been forced to plunge all 60million citizens into lockdown (top-right). The pandemic has taken a choke-hold on everyday life, with even Pope Francis retreating indoors to make his weekly address via videolink (bottom-right, St Peter's Square).

'You are NOT alone': Government announces unprecedented aid packages of food and medicine will be delivered to 1.5 MILLION vulnerable Britons as letters are posted ordering them to stay at home for 12 weeks

The 1.5million 'extremely vulnerable' people across in the UK will be offered food, medicine and other deliveries, the Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick MP confirmed. The minister said those who had specific medical conditions and were particularly at risk from the virus, would be offered the packages to help protect them from the illness. Earlier today Mr Jenrick said that GPs were writing to thousands of patients with pre-existing health conditions and would be asking to stay at home 'perhaps as long as 12 weeks'.

Coronavirus in the U.S.: Latest Map and Case Count

Okay, so just looking at the data we have right now, I'm concerned that the earlier estimates of the lethality of this virus may have been significantly lower than they actually are.

One of the reasons this can happen is just simple mathematics: when you take the number of fatalities and divide that by the number of official cases....if the virus is spreading very rapidly then a bulk of the total official cases are only recently reported cases, so dividing the fatalites by that number gives you a much lower percentage than the actual fatality rate, since it takes on average 3-4 weeks for a newly admitted patient to die from the disease. Apparently the Director of the WHO used that faulty math to arrive at his earlier estimate of a 3.4% fatality rate.

But at this point we now have a large number of closed cases, so we can get a clear empirical estimate of the actual fatality rate. Here it is:

ScreenHunter_1899 Mar. 22 19.47.jpg
Source: Coronavirus Update (Live): 336,838 Cases and 14,616 Deaths from COVID-19 Virus Outbreak - Worldometer

That's a really frightening number, 13%. But there's another factor which plays a key role here - the percentage of cases that aren't reported. There's no clear way to determine that percentage (and the higher it is, the lower that 13% fatality rate becomes), because in the US and some other countries, only a very tiny fraction of the population has been tested. So we don't have the data required in order to determine the actual number of people infected vs. the number who seek medical testing and treatment.

I'm seeing an encouraging number in some articles - a lot of people think that only 20% of the infected develop the kinds of serious symptoms that lead to testing and medical treatment. If that's true (and I don't know how to confirm that number because we don't have any consistently modeled reliable data on that), then the fatality rate is about 2.6%.

Here's the part that worries me though: the closed cases data is telling us that if you test positive for this virus, then you're facing a 13% chance of dying from it.

If I've missed something or my logic is flawed somewhere, let me know: I want to be wrong about this.

Well that's wonderful for States that actually care about their people, Here in Kentucky we have a guy Called Andy Beshear as our governor, Who every day on twitter talks about how he is quarantining, basically just showing his daily life, While Still not shutting down Kentucky, yet, He is safe on quarantine locked down in his mansion. ... And he keeps telling us bullshitical nonsense like, We are a strong "country folk" We will tough it through this "Together" It's infuriating nonsense.

fear has turned to rage at this point. There is Stupid, But then there is recklessly dangerously ignorantly neglectfully stupid, like Andy Beshear...

Gov. Andy Beshear: Prepare, but don’t panic. ‘We will get through this together.’

That's what we get. A dumbass redneck amidst a pandemic who he himself has quarantined himself and his family. Not quarantining his state and telling us, We are a strong robust folk who can walk this shit off.

....

...

Kentucky will die from stupidity. All I can say is, Goodbye guys it was nice knowing you all.

I mean look at that guy,

This is the guy that thinks, our "country Genetics" will allow us to sweat this shit out.

I don't know if people can tell, I truly am irate.

Yes it's a huge problem that retards are running most of our government at every level and that's going to kill a whole lot of people.

But on the other hand your personal risk of exposure is in your hands, and if you act appropriately then you and yours can have a very high chance of getting through this without getting infected.

Statistically this is going to be a massive national disaster because our leaders are simpletons. But at the individual level it's up to us what risks we take, and the consequences that we'll pay for taking them. Nivek has the right idea: don't take any risks and you'll probably dodge this bullet. Millions of people will get through this without becoming infected. Be one of those people.

I hope I can be one of those people, My wife Sam, She wants this New Job they offered her, See she works for child services. They recently promoted her to Child protection Branch staff manager. Basically, Everyone is quitting out of fear and she is one of the few people willing to get out in this and work. And now. They are dangling a 130 thousand annual salary over her head. Don't get me wrong, That's not small money, But we don't "Need" it. we could live comfortably without it. But no, she sees this as a huge opportunity. So, My wife has stars in her eyes and a patriotic belief that she's saving lives, Which to some degree she is. But still. Child protection will be the last thing to shut down. but to add to this,
We have to move to Lexington, Which is Kentucky's epicenter. So this is why I'm freaking out and panicking.

I am a hermit who could easily dodge this, But extenuating circumstances threaten my life that I can not avoid. It's Unjust brother, :(

When you say "child services"are you talking about the state dept of social services? If so, $74,000 is actually pretty good for a state job.

Yes. I don't even know where I came up with 13o. That was a number mentioned at some point in mine and Sams talks about this. my thing is, THey have tried to promote her before but we didn't want to move, and everything was great. Now, suddenly she wants to move right into the hell pit that is Lexington.

And me, I'm over here worrying because she's leaving the house at all right now... It sucks.

You've got some difficult decisions to make - but they are yours to make. You describe your situation in terms of "extenuating circumstances threaten my life that I can not avoid," but the truth is that you can avoid them; you just don't want to avoid them. That's a big difference.

These are life-and-death decisions. We're in some serious shit right now brother. A lot of the people who take unnecessary risks at this moment in history are going to die. If there were ever a time in your life to say "Baby, I love you - but I won't be able to keep loving you if I'm dead. So do your thing, and be super careful, but I'm going to need a few months to chill out in a cabin until this thing blows over - and when that happens I'll catch up with you." Or words to that effect anyway.

Idk - I just wanted to point out that you're not a leaf on the wind - you have choices. They're yours to make.

You are right, But to make those decisions May require Drastic steps that I don't know if I am prepared to make. However you do make a very true point, Now is the time to be figuring that out. I have even considered, What if her phone comes up missing and the car magically broke down. The thought has crossed my mind, But that is so dishonest it's almost criminal. And besides, we literally have at least thirty devices she can just log on to the net. cutting communications would require that somehow both our ISP's stopped working. The clues would automatically point to me. It just feels like a half baked scheme, I know the real true steps I would have to take, And I don't even know If That's an option. I know some people would consider leaving. But, There was that whole in sickness and health thing, Marriage in some ways can be a prison and I never saw that more clearly than now. I pledged my life to her and now there is Danger in the air.

Seems they have updated the Johns Hopkins coronavirus Map, Most usually it won't show locations, I don't know if this is a temporary oversite or what but here is a current pic of the U.S Showing locations of the Virus spread.
